I have a max of 12 workers. The project must be completed by 5/16/12. Right now I have to reduce it from 5/29/12 to 5/16/12 with only 12 workers. I know that the critical path has to be shortened, but that means adding more resources, and I don't have that much room to add more (I only got 12). Is there an automatic process where MS Project can allocate unused resources to reduce the time frame?

No, Microsoft Project has no such automatic process to allocate unused resources to shorten the timeline of the project.  A good place to look for available resources is the Resource Usage view.  If you have Microsoft Project 2010 Professional version, you can apply the new Team Planner view, which will also show you who is available to work on tasks to shorten the timeline.  Hope this helps.

No. You will need to look at the Resource or Task Usage views to look at when people are 'under allocated' and then make adjustments manually.

A split view with a Gantt on the top and the Resource Usage on the bottom can be very helpful.

Some prefer Resource\Task usage on the top and resource graph on the bottom.

    Hi,

As Dale and Brian have suggested there is no automated feature; only option is you use Resource Usage or Team Planner View to gauge the free time of a Resource. Re-assignment has to be done manually only by the PM to meet the shortened project duration. You can open Resource Usage View and insert Remaining Avail. row in the right sheet view along with Work. This will give you clear picture of utilization.

Check in snapshot Resource Li is free on Friday and Monday, so he can be allocated on task c along with Sam. Next task of 'li' that is g starts on Tuesday, so for 2 days he can be assigned with Sam. Having said that, it has to be done manually after viewing a resource's free time and assignments.
