How to set word mappings

  I was wondering if there is a way to set the speech engine to say one word when it reads another so that it does this for every occurence? For example, to read out an abbreviation in its expanded form consistently. I was hoping there would be a way other than doing a manual method to just replace text before sending it to the speech engine. Could the SSML say-as interpret-as types be extended to include custom variations perhaps?
