    Previous Versions for files on Windows Home Server Shared Folders may not function correctly.

    Introduction
    Windows Home Server uses Volume Shadow Services to support Previous Versions functionality for files stored in Shared Folders on the home server. Windows Home Server normally triggers a snapshot every 12 hours, enabling users to access previous versions of files stored in Shared Folders on a home server, through the Previous Versions functionality available in some Windows client operating system editions.

    Symptoms
    When accessing previous versions of files and folders in Windows Home Server Shared Folders, you may see one of several error messages, instead of the expected results. This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
    • You are using an HP Media Smart Server.
    or
    • Your Windows Home Server has more than one hard drive added to Server Storage by using the Windows Home Server Console, and
    • The file is in a Shared Folder that  does not have Folder Duplication enabled, and
    • The Windows Home Server has been rebooted since the time the snapshot being accessed was taken
    or
    • The Windows Home Server has three or more hard disks added in Server Storage, and
    • The file or folder has no shadows on the primary hard disk drive, and
    • The Windows Home Server has been rebooted since the time the snapshot being accessed was taken
    If the above conditions are true, one or more of the following results may be seen when accessing Previous Versions of Shared Folders on a home server from Windows Explorer on a home computer:
    • No Previous Versions will be listed.
    • When attempting to View a Previous Version of a file, a user will see a file not found error. Windows uses the default program for the file type to attempt opening the file for viewing, so the specific text of the error depends on the software being used to view the Previous Version. For example, WordPad will display the error:
      “\\<server>\<share>\<date time stamp>\<filepath>\<filename>
      “Cannot find this file.”
      “Please verify that the correct path and file name are given.”
    • When attempting to view a Microsoft Word (.doc) file it is possible to View a Previous Version of a folder, but if the files within meet the conditions above, you will still see an error.
    • When attempting to Copy a Previous Version of a file or folder, a user will see the error “Cannot copy <filename>: Invalid file handle.”
    • When attempting to Restore a Previous Version of a file or folder, a user will see the error “Cannot copy <filename>: Invalid file handle.”
    Note: This issue only affects Windows Home Server.  This issue does not affect any other versions of Windows Server or any versions of Windows Small Business Server.

    Status
    Microsoft is researching this problem. Until this problem is resolved you should not rely on Previous Versions for the Shared Folders on Windows Home Server to roll back files and folders to previous states, or to restore deleted files and folders from the Shared Folders on a home server.
