On the HPC 2008 Eval site it has downloads for the HPC Pack as well as Windows Server 2008 HPC Edition which is said to be limited to an HPC workload. However, it appears as though I am able to add and run traditional roles (AD, IIS, HyperV, etc.) from this supposedly limited distribution...? Can anyone explain this behavior? My understanding is that an HPC compute node license is considerably less than a normal W2K8 license and as such you wouldn't expect them to have the same functionality, correct?

The usage of Windows Server 2008 HPC Edition is restricted to HPC-related activities. That does not mean that it can only run the Microsoft HPC Pack, you can run any other HPC software on it, and some of these applications may require features of IIS or one of the other roles which are available.
