On running a visula report (for Excel) I keep getting this error:

• XML for Analysis perser: The LocaleIdentifier property is not overwritable and cannot be assigned a new value

The dialogue only offer "OK" and after selecting this I am returned to project with a new error:

• Excel is busy. This may be beacsue Excel is currently waiting for user input...switch to excel to correct the problem, then try again

on selcting Ok (again the only option) I am returned to the Create Report screen.

Any ideas?

thank you.................... liz

Hi liz,

This forum is specifically for matters dealing with Microsoft Project.  I suggest you try to find a more appropriate forum that deals with Excel problems.

Mike,

Visual Reports are part of project.

I don't know the solution to this, but I'd try these steps and see if it still is a problem.

Reboot.

Start project and try a visual report with excel.

If you still get an error post back here

THis should resolve any issues related to excel being busy or in use by some other process.

Dear Jack,

Have already tried what you suggested and I am going nuts about this, so to be clear I am using Project Pro 2010 and trying to use visual reports but failing, I am up against a deadline. On both machines I am using I get this error:
XML for analysis parser. The locale identifier property is not overwriteable and cannot be assigned a new value
Only option is to OK (or close using the X). On doing this project the reports this error:
Excel is busy. This may be because Excel is currently waiting for user input... Switch to excel to correct the probel, then try again
Only option is to OK (or close using the X). I do this but then Project is frozen, the only way to exit is by killing it in Task Manager.

I have found several references to this on the net with several suggested solution - it seems to be a known problem - I have have checked various things such as the sql 2005 versions - all uptodate as far as I can tell, the language options, all aligned as far as I can tell. I have wasted many hours on this and am desperate to get some real work done. Can anyone suggest anything?

UPDATE: the error does not occur if I craete a report from scratch.

in frustration.............................liz

Good day sir

I recently taught a course, expecting this feature to work. It doesn't, and the delegates are rightfully entitled to an answer. It is not an exclusively Excel problem. IT is a project problem, while using Excel graph. Have you come up with a satisfactory solution?

Thank you

Here is how we resolve it. We have our regional settings configured for Dutch (Belgium).

• Change regional setting to English (US)
• re-start MS Project, create visual report again and the report displays
• then reset regional setting back to its original setting (the visual reports keep working)

Hope this helps

Kind regards

Excellent! Same problem, solution works. However, should be patched to avoid disruption

Hi Liz

Thanks for posting your problem description on this Blog. Did you solve your problem with Project Server? I get the same sequence of errors working with Project Professional 2010. The frustrating part is that I can see the Visual Report created in Excel but as soon as the error occurs Microsoft deletes the result. I tried setting the Locale to English (US) as suggested by Kurt but still get the same error seguence. A little human engineering would suggest not wiping out the result just because the locale cannot be updated.

Hi Liz

Why is it that some people can get Visual Reports to work and we cannot? I suspect that some of us our working with larger projects. Timephased pivot data in Project can be very large. I created a small test project with 4 tasks and 3 resources. I also turned off Visio Option in the Visual Report Option.

I created a new Visual Report with just Work, Start and Cost. When I ran Visual Reports for the smaller project, I received another error message,

"You are attempting to open a file type that has been blocked by File Block settings in Excel > File > Options > Trust Center > File Block Settings > Select all files types to be Read / Write (Excel 4, 3, 2. etc).

My Visual Reports for the small project now works like a charm. Now I have to back track and find out how many changes, I can undo for Visual Reports to still keep working.

Let me know if you have solved this problem.

hi Liz

A simple workaround discovered after several days of experimentation.
1. Select the report that you want in the Visual Reports dialog box.
2. Click on 'New Template' in same dialog box.

Don't click the view button or the old error will reoccur.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Brian thanks for your answer.  I was having the same issue that Liz described above.  I live in Canada and tried changing the zone to US but it made no difference.   Your answer above worked perfectly.  Thanks!
