Losing Confidence in WHS as a stable OS.
- UNGH. I've been using WHS with no issue on PP1 since it was released...
I have a UPS attached to the WHS, and I have an add in that automatically emails me whenever one of the Event Logs encounters an error so I can assess it's severity and login to the server as needed.
I log into the WHS console tonight just to look into things and I see the Green Network is Healthy Icon.
I have Duplication enabled for ALL my shares.
The Pie chart Shows 1.5TB of storage being used, yet the duplication is only showing 18GB! HUH?
I then look at the shared folders. All the Shares still have Duplication set as ON, and they all have a Green Lights next to them.
This has SEVERELY shaken my condifence in this OS as a viable platform.
I rebooted the system and I have the same issue.
Event logs are CLEAN.
I have since turned OFF and then turned ON Duplication for all of the shares and it appears it is now copying the files again to the other drives which all report as empty within disk management. This is completely unacceptable. The more moving and jockeying of files the more there is a chance something is going to get corrupted or lost in the shuffle.
I am really not sure where to go from here, but I can see XP Pro going back on that system if this is what I can expect moving forward.

Now if you had been using the final version, then I can see where you might have a reason to be concerned...

Hi,
your description is a bit unclear to me. You wrote

The 1.5 TByte shown for shares only or including the backups?
Both are a different issue, PC backups will not be duplicated, files and folders in the shares will.
You also said, disk management shows the disks as empty. Did you right click on the disk, select Properties and check there?

Olaf,
The 1.5TB is the total disk space being used for the Shares.
I do not have PC Backups enabled on WHS.
Previously the Pie Chart would Show 1.5TB for the Shares in Yellow, and then an equal chunk (1.5TB) in orange for duplication.
Then suddenly duplication shows at 18gb even though duplication was not touched and still reads as ON for each share.
Each share reads as healthy.
I verified via the Disk Management Plugin, and by viewing the disks within Device Manager Disk Management, that the drives that previously were being used for duplication were all empty.
I only use WHS for file storage and I only access the server via the shares to read and write data.
I am really scratching my head here on why this has happened.
I really do not care that I have to re duplicate the files a second time, I am more concerned that there are things happening under the hood which I cannot see and that my data could be damaged.
The user yields a LOT of control to WHS, which means you need to trust it with your files.
Based on this latest event thats seems pretty hard.

Hi flad,
is there something in the shares, which may have stopped to replicate with PP1, maybe recorded TV shows from Media Center (which are also excluded from normal backups)?
(Just speculating ...)
Maybe after duplication shows as completed run a tool to find the differences between the shares folders directly on the drives on the server.
If there is something damaged, you should see related messages in the event log of the server at least.
Best greetings from Germany
Olaf
- Ok the duplication finally completed and now I am back to 1.5 (TB) shared, and 1.5 (TB) duplicated.
I installed the Duplication Info add in and from what that is showing me all the files are on 2 different drives.
I am not sure if I should create a connect item on this or if I am spinning my wheels, but Software shouldn't do something unless it is instructed to.
Deleting all the duplicated files off the disks even when the shares still read duplication is ON, is pretty disconcerting.
I guess nobody has any ideas on this due to the small ammount of responses. fladtheimpaler wrote: I guess nobody has any ideas on this due to the small ammount of responses.
(*also scratching my head*) Not really.
What I find most disconcerning about this is that there where no healt-warnings at all. Share duplication was reported "ON" but was not. Nothing in the logs. Toggling the duplication setting restarted duplication. No problem!? According to WHS everythings was fine?
The only thing I can think of is that DriveExtender somehowe got mixed up with the duplication flags in the configuration.
These flags where reported to the console as being "ON" but Drive extender did not see them as "ON" (hence it deleted all duplicates? I can not see the logic in there.
As WHS stores the duplication settings in the registry; maybe some (access) problems there that have been resolved by restarting the system? Anything in the eventlist on the registry?
Just some wild guess. I do not know how this could relate to your problem: I remember wondering why WHS stores some backup of its configuration in a file named whs.reg which is in fact a dump off all its registry settings (which includes the Starage Manger DWORD 'Reliable' values).
Theo.
Flad,
Your problem bothers me. What you experienced could be just one single event that no one of us will ever see happening. On the other hand, I think one should take problems like this very serious.
Maybe it is a good idea to make a copy of your current WHS logfiles, save to keep for further inspection? Also you should consider reporting this to Connect (including .CAB file).
Theo.

- Nope. I have been running the pre release of PP1 since it went beta and everything has been great.

- Yes but when i looked at Add\Remove programs it said "Pre Release of PowerPack1" and it referenced the same KB944289 name.
I have updated to the GA version of PP1 and it did update the builds I will monitor it from here. - Hi Flad, if this comes up in any way again, could you send us a report via Connect? That would be greatly appreciated so we could look into it further for you right away.
Thanks in advance!
