Migration plan?

  I have a WHS build that is giving me a lot of trouble, with errors on the system disk and the new beta seems a good enough opportunity to rebuild and start again.  I don’t see any great bargains in server hardware at the moment so I’m reluctant to buy a entire server.

  The current Machine is a HP Proliant ML110 G4 with I think a Xeon 3040 1.8ish and 1Gb RAM, plus a 500Gb system Disk and two additional 1.5TB disks.  I think the shared folders total is probably between 1 and 1.5 Gb.

  I though I would:

  1.    Buy a 1.5Tb drive (best value price point a the moment, I think) and copy all the shard data onto it.

  2.    Delete all but a couple of backups per machine.

  3.    Delete the shared data

  4.    Hope the backups left are <0.5Gb.- if not find a spare 500Gb disk and add it

  5.    Remove the two 1.5Tb drives in the console

  6.    Shutdown the machine and remove the system drive (or drives if 4 is a problem), noting the drive numbers and store

  7.    Build the ‘Vail’ WHS with the two 1.4Tbs

  8.    Connect the spare 1.5Tb and copy all the data to the correct shared folders

  9.    Add the drive to the WHS storage pool

  I should be left with a nice clean server with lots of storage and if something awful happens and I need to go back to an old backup of a machine, I can shut down the server and reboot it with the old drives.

  Does this sound sensible?  And is the hardware sufficient for the new server?
