Activation Error

    問題

  • Hey folks. Here's my story.

Bought an emachine in 2001 with Windows XP Home installed on it. It didn't come with a Windows CD (if  it did, I lost it). Comp has WinXP SN glued on the side.

Bought a Dell in 2002 with Windows XP Home installed on it. It did't come with a CD period- only a restore CD provided by Dell. It also has XPHome SN glued on computer's side. Have since pruchased XP Pro for this machine and not re-installed but actually re-formatted the drive and did a full install of XP Pro.

Used laptop's CD to reformat and re-install XPhome on the eMachine. Tried to activate using either eMachine's  or Dell's

XP Home SNs but product won't activate. I understand because the SN should match the CD's internal SN.

But, shouldn't I be able to use either license from the

But, because I technically have two open licenses for XP Home, can't I use the S/N that originally came with the eMachine?

And if I can use this SN (it is in accordance with EULA), how do I activate this using install media that doesn match?

    Thanks

    B

Please activate Windows XP by calling a Microsoft customer service representative. The Activation Wizard displays the toll free number that you can dial.

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative and activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click “Start”, point to” All Programs”, point to “Accessories”, point to” System Tools”, and then click “Activate Windows”.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.

    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.

    3. Click “Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement”, click “Back”, and then click “Next”
    .
    4. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box and then click “Next”.
Note:  The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.

    5. Once activation is completed and you receive the following message, click “OK”.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.

    Bcarr,

Another option is contact Emachine and order the recovery software media. Recovery Software CD’s are specific to your computer manufacturer. Please contact your manufacturer for assistance. They should be able to assist with your request and/or questions. Since the telephone number and web sites are not maintained by Microsoft we cannot make any warranty as to their validity.

I have included their contact information here for your convenience:
