I have a genuine copy of windows 7 but it says it isn't

    問題

  • I received a copy of Windows 7 from my university and after a month or two, it started saying that it's not a genuine copy. It most definitely is! I keep getting annoying notifications telling me to buy a genuine copy. I saw that there were other posts similar to this and the response seemed to be to run the diagnostics software. I did and this is what came up:

So....I'm confused. I'm not much of a tech person. I re-entered the product key to try and activate it again, and it said that there was an error and that the software can only be used for upgrading not clean installations. I don't understand why it worked for a while and isn't now. Oh Microsoft, you're killing me here!

    AH – now we’re getting somewhere :)
That error message means exactly what it says – that your Key is one from an Upgrade.
Your problem is that you neglected to enter the Key when you first installed Windows 7 – with the results you’re now getting.
You need to reinstall over-the-top (an Upgrade install) using the disk you have, and remember this time to enter the product key from your University. that should automatically activate when complete – but please post a new MGADiag report when you finish.
Note that you will probably have to reinstall all updates afterwards.

  • This copy of Windows has not been activated.

    License Status: Notification
Notification Reason: 0xC004F009 (grace time expired).

The 30 days grace period is up and now you need to activate Windows.  Click Start and type "activate".  Follow the instructions if any.

The Key in use here is the Default Key  - which cannot be activated.

You need to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case, and then activate – probably by phone (but try internet activation first).

  • Noel,

    Windows Product ID Type: 5
    Windows License Type: Retail

The COA key on the case would be incorrect.  Doesn't he just need to activate?

Look at the Key, Colin – it’s the Default Key for Pro, which cannot be activated.
All Default Keys show as Retail – but they are activation and validation blocked.

  • If you entered the product key from the sticker on the dvd case and got the upgrade only message then your copy has an upgrade license.  You need to reactivate by phone and explain the circumstances to a live operator.  Be sure you copy the product key from the computer (on the case or in a battery compartment) in case the operator asks for it.  Click Start and type "slui.exe 4", select your region, and follow the directions.  Do not select any options and you will eventually get a live operator.
