key no longer genuine, reformated - updated hardware - reinstalled, to many times?

I've still got my OEM case with the product key on the back sitting behind me on the bookshelf
I think after so many big hardware changes thus reinstalling windows, the key ceased to be genuine..
I can see how the Microsoft software might see the key trying to be used on more than one computer but..
It's only ever been actively used on one state of my desktop at a time, by that i mean it may look to be installed
on more than the 3 computers the license will allow but those other 3 installs have never tried to update or been used since..
they are just old motherboards and old hard-drives now..
I've got the physical ownership of the license (the case with the holographic install disc in it) and I know the key hasn't fallen into anyone's hands.
Should I not be able to get this key re-validated some how?
Itunes lets you De-authorize a computer prior to reformatting to keep the amount of consecutive uses of your account on a new computer free for up to 5 computers..
Steam the online game launcher from valve has millions if not hundreds of millions of users who have never been able to play online pirated through steam due to needing a log in.
I'm actually very surprised Microsoft hasn't come up with a similar way to keep people's keys permanently valid through a endless amount of hardware upgrades and re-installations .. :(
but any help is greatly appreciated!

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )Once saved, run the tool.Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report. To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.- **in your own thread**, pleasePlease also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!Note that each license for Vista only allows installation on ONE machine at a time - and OEM licenses CANNOT be transferred to new machines, or for motherboard upgrades.

I either didn't save the bookmark and proceeded with the format and had given up trying to find the first post I made again..
OR had not intended to come back to the forums again and had gone no further than leaving this page up in the browser and something else happened.
either way, will do as mentioned above, thanks.
