Sync to Sharepoint 2010 issue; Manage Fields to existing Sharepoint Column

Hello all! This issue is in regards to using Project 2010 Sync to Task List option.
I'm trying to map the Work field in Project over to the existing sharepoint column called Total Work (the column in tasks that has work hours). When I do so from Project in the Manage Fields area, it adds a new column vice use the existing Total Work column. Does anyone have a suggestion to work around this? Maybe some macro on sync that maps to the correct field???
Thanks!
Sam

Hi Sam,
I only see the "Work" column in SharePoint and when I modify the fields and select "Work" from Project, it automatically fills in "Work" in SharePoint. What version of SharePoint are you using?

We are running 2010. I don't think we have SP1 installed yet.
We are using SP as our project mgmt portal and end users use outlook to connect to the project tasks, then sync back progress. My goal is to have the Work field mapped to outlooks Total Work field.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Sam,
I'm away from my office today -- but I'll take a look at the full round trip tonight and let you know what I find. Off the top of my head -- can you map Work in SP to Total Work in Outlook? Then you could just modify the map in outlook.

That's a good question Julie & would solve my issue. How would I map the Work field to the Total Work in Outlook?

Hi Sam,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I did have a chance to experiment with this last night and I see what you see. Outlook 2010 has a "Total Work" and "Actual Work" field showing in the detail of the task. When I map the work in Project to Work in SharePoint the values transfer easily to SharePoint. However, when I open the Task List in Outlook - the work values are no where to be seen. Better yet, changing the value in Actual Work in outlook -- has no effect on Work in either SharePoint nor Project. The only data I seem to be able to pass back and forth is percent complete.
In doing some addtional searching around, it appears this may be "by design". I have searched through the Sharepoint forum and see mostly posts about 3rd party products that will expose custom fields for synchronization. However, I am certainly not well versed in SharePoint customization, so it may be worth your time to post your question to the Sharepoint forum.

Thanks Julie,
I found a 3rd party solution. I did a trial on Teamdirection "Inteligantt Project Add-in" and it worked - so now I buy. What is nice about this pluggin is that you can map the actual fields from project to your sharepoint lists. Sucks that this feature is not available in Project 2010 but @ least the 3rd party market has the power users covered.
Thanks for your help!

Great. I'm glad you've found a 3rd party product that does what you need. Does the product solve the SharePoint to Outlook synch as well? I was under the impression that you were looking to get your data in Outlook and then use the SharePoint synch to feed the data back to Project.

Hi Julie. I was using MS Project to get my data to SharePoint. My problem was that the Work Column in Project was not mapping to the SharePoint Total Work column. This tool allows me to do map individual columns from Project to SharePoint.
Thanks!
