Stephen, this isn't a wiki; it doesn't have (or need, really) disambiguation pages.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

It took me hours to comb through the forum to find the different threads for people having connection problems using the Restore CD Wizard.  After searching using different strings I found several common underlying issues.  I'm hoping that this thread will help others find these basic issues more quickly.

I am sorry to say but the restore screen should also include that you need hours and hours of time to troubleshoot network connections to the home server, when every other machine on the network can see the server.

For 5 hours now i have been trying to get the PC i am restoring to see the home server.  I have tried all of the suggestions here aside from using an old router, and none seem to work.  Its ridiculous to not have any type of ipconfig or network diagnostics as part of the restore CD.

This is a waste of time, at this point a fresh install and reloading applications from scratch would be faster.

Also, notice how it defaults to machines with less than 512MB of RAM.  How long has it been since a machine had those specs as normal?  Many years.  If they had the right one at the top, you could actually boot from the restore disc with no intervention, now you have to watch it and see when the prompt comes up to choose how much memory.  This small lack of thinking/analysis costs many many users lots of wasted time.  It would seem like this bug falls in the attention to detail category.

    Hi,

Are you using the latest restore CD?
Are you using a system with a Realtek NIC?

    Lara,

I am having the same problem as described above by savistas.  And yes, my Asus netbook has a builtin Realtek NIC.  I am using the latest restore disk downloadable from the msdn site.

    Your comments would be welcome.

Is there a specific issue with Alienware Laptops and this problem?
