Vista Activation I recently purchased Vista Ultimate and am now trying to activate it. After entering my key, the online activation sent an error saying the key was in use. The software was new in the box so the key has to be unused right? So I tried phone activation and the Product ID was not valid. What is going on?

When this was originally posted it contained a Product ID not a Product KEY. Please pay closer attention to the posts deleted provided a Product ID cannot be used to activate a windows product especially when the post clearly states that it was not accepted in the first place.

When you try to activate please make sure you click "Next" or press Enter after you enter your product key, but do not click "Activate Windows online now". Please let me know if that works. Thank you!
- I tried that and Windows automatically verifies it with an MS server and says it is in use. Anything else to try?
Online and phone activation are the only two ways to activate a retail copy of Vista. I would suggest going through the "Change product key" link in System Properites window and entering your key there. If that doesn't work please try phone activating again. Perhaps one of the numbers was misheard or mistyped the first time. Thanks!
- I have reentered my product key using "Change Product Key" and it automatically verifies it online with no luck. I tried again without an internet connection and used the ID provided to activate by phone. The ID is still unrecognized. What else is there to do? I have paid a lot of money for this software and I won't have anything to show for it in 24 days. So please continue to do your best in solving this problem. Thank you.
One other way to activate online is through an elevated command prompt. (Right-click on command prompt in the Start menu and choose "Run as administrator.)
Enter:
slmgr -ipk <your product key>
That should enter your product key.
Then enter:
slmgr -ato
That should activate for you.

- Yes, that is correct.
Unfortunately this key is blocked. (Not because of anything you did, since it's been blocked since Aug 2006.)
Is this the product key inside the box your CD came in? If it is inside the box, you should definately go back to the seller and tell them they gave you a bad key. Can you tell me where you bought your copy of Vista?
- It is not the key that came with the software. After trying the key that came with the software and seeing the results, I searched the internet for a key knowing it was going to already have been used to try to match up error messages and solve the problem myself. Obviously I had no luck. The software was purchased at Circuit City.
What were the results when you tried the key that came with the software? Are you getting the "product key in use" error (0xC004C003) with that key? If so please try using that key in the "Change product key" link, with phone activation (slui 4 in command prompt), or in the command prompt way I suggested before with the "slmgr" calls.
