Counterfeit message - XP is not counterfeit!
- I am getting the counterfeit software message. I have followed suggestions to no avail. I can no longer obtain any updates.
I have downloaded the following file ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498 ) and attempted to install it - but I get
"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer".
I have made sure the Cryptographic service is running. I have stopped/restarted it. I had no problems until it downloaded updates approx two weeks ago. I know for a 100% fact this Windows XP Pro is not counterfeit. So what gives? How do I fix this short of a reload of XP? No harware changes, no software added or removed.

The issue seems to lie with the "unknown" signature that is coming up more commonly now. The "unknown" signature denotes a problem with detecting digital signatures.
Can you try these steps?

- That fixed the problem. I was able to get the updates and no more counterfeit messages. I think there is an issue with this new validating software. I am for stopping piracy - but this is crazy. jmo - thanks for the help.
I'm having same problem- I have a computer now for 3 yrs with no problems (bought new) and now when I boot up it says I may be a victim of counterfeiting. I’ve tried to run aspx diagnostics but it will not work from the "genuine" site.
In tried the reg32 approach above and now I can receive updates but the counterfeit message comes again on reboot!
- I am also getting these messages. One computer was just a year old and I was told that the hard drive had gone bad. We replaced and now it is saying it again. It has Windows Vista.
My other computer is 7 years old with Windows XP - it is also getting the counterfeit message. I have not had problems in years and am now getting the issue. The version is not counterfet I know for a fact. What can I do to stop these messages?
