    Hi to all,

I recently had to rebuild my system from scratch and after installing Windows I tried to update and found that the copy of Windows XP Professional that I bought was pirated. With the price of a new DSP copy averaging about £280 I opted to take Microsoft up on their offer and paid the £91 for a new Product Key and CD (still to arrive). When I tried to run the Product Key Update Tool I received the error code 0x80004005.

After searching the web and reading about 20 or 30 explanations for this problem and how to solve it (make sure no proxy is installed, no firewall or AV active, look at the HOSTS file) I have STILL not been able to connect to the server and change my product key. I disabled the Windows Firewall as well.

I am also getting the same error on my 3 week old Packard Bell machine which is totally legit when I try to update my Windows. That machine has Windows and MS Office AND THAT'S IT. I was successfully able to update on that machine yesterday so I know that my ISP is not the issue.

Is there a problem with Microsoft's Update website because I can't update my PB machine and I can't update my product key.

Here is the MGA Diagnostic Tool Log:

    Cryo1981,

In addition to what you mentioned, antispyware programs could be preventing full communication between the Updater and MS servers.

Also, since you mentioned that your PB encounters the same problem, if both computers have the same Internet Service Provider (ISP), there is the possibility that you have some kind of connectivity issue originating with your ISP.  Other posters with inexplicable connectivity problems seem to be having some success by changing DNS servers.  If you feel comfortable trying to change TCP/IP settings in either the computers or your router (if applicable), try using a different DNS server than what your ISP provides.  I happen to use www.opendns.com, which operates DNS servers at 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

Post back to let us know how you do.
