I am trying to upgrade a Dell D505 laptop that came with XP Pro SP1a to SP2.  The upgrade always fails at at "Checking product key".  I tried all the fixes on this site and none has worked.  I was having problems with auto updates so I have now reinstalled XP SP1a from the Dell restoration CDs and successfully updated all updates automatically except SP2.  SP2 still fails at Checking product key.  I have used the MGADiage tool and all looks right.  Does anyone have any ideas or seen this before.

    MGADiag.exe as follows

You can obtain free Windows Update support, including SP2 installation issues, by contacting Microsoft support: http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=3518&gprid=185522

Your system is perfectly genuine and shouldn't be held back from any updates or such. HOWEVER, SP2 is not a WGA gated item - meaning it does not need to go through validation to correctly process and install.

Unfortunately, I hate to pass you off, but the question you have is out of the scope of the forum. I'd suggest finding the corresponding SP2 forum/newsgroup from www.support.microsoft.com.

(The issue may also be iwthin the digital signture issue in your error log file - I would recommend checking http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=813442)

    I hope this helps,

This worked for me (recommended for a Dell laptop, I have a Vaio):

    1) Please go into the CMD prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe )

    2) Then type cd /d %windir%\inf and make sure we are in that
    directory.

    3) Then type ren oem*.inf oem*.old, it will go back to the prompt
after giving you some error (Do not worry about it)

    4) Then type ren oem*.pnf oem*.old1, it will go back to the prompt
after giving you some error (Do not worry about it)

    5) Then goto start - run - type "%windir%\inf" and you will see
    the files in the folder.

    6) Then find the file by name INFCACHE.1 and take a backup of it
to desktop (by copying it to desktop) and delete the INFCACHE.1
    from c:\windows\inf.

    7) Close all windows and reboot the computer to safe mode and
start the installation of SP2 and it should go fine.

    Cheers
    Ste

Actually I can not obtain free support.  My machine had a prodcut id that is Dell OEM so they say I have to pay 35.00 for supprort.  Do I have a gunuine copy of windows?  What is wrong with my product ID that I can't upgrade to SP2.

BTW  I see this error at the end of the setupapi.log file
