Problems with Vista and LifeCam NX-6000
Locked
Hello CXP team,
Having a problem with an NX-6000 LifeCam on Vista Ultimate RTM. CXP 4.0.61110.0 client crashes when I try to configure the video device. This exception is thrown every time I try to configure Advanced Settings after selecting the LifeCam device. I also note that the Test Video button has no effect (though it doesn't throw an exception), and that under Advanced Settings, Video Format, all of the controls in the dialog box are disabled. Easy to reproduce: load CXP client, Settings, Audio/Video, select LifeCam, Advanced Settings, Close, Close, exception. Thx.

Hi John,
It just so happens that I installed Vista RTM on my test machine yesterday and I happened to obtain a LifeCam VX-6000. I'll be giving it a try today to see what I discover. Thanks for the report!
JVE
John,
The 1.1 drivers that I have on CD would not install. Vista brought up a dialog indicating an incompatibility.
The 1.21 drivers that WinXP automatically upgraded also did not install on Vista.
The incompatibility dialogue led me to the 1.3 drivers (at http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/digitalcommunication/downloads/default.mspx), which work just fine with the VX-6000 (non-notebook version).
What drivers are you running anyhow and how did you get them installed? You must be more persistent than me. :-) Please try the 1.3 drivers.
JVE
hmm ... I'm also running the 1.3 drivers, acquired from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/digitalcommunication/downloads/default.mspxI didn't even try any of the earlier drivers, I just waited for these to becom available. The camera works fine with the LifeCam control panel, Vista doesn't have any issues with it, I can capture stills and videos etc, but the CXP4 client isn't happy. CXP sees it as a device, but that's about it.
John,
Well, it is starting to sound more like a difference with the specific camera. I will see if Todd can get me a notebook version to test against. Or perhaps I could RD into the machine. You can send the request to my work address, which I believe you have.

- Hi Jason,
I have a different problem altogether with the latest drivers (1.3) and my VX6000. The control panel will simply crash every time I launch it. So far the camera is unusable in my Vista Ultimate 32 installation. It seems I am not alone in this since I could find a lot of other users experiencing the same kind of trouble. Looking in the event log I see that the crash has something to do with the ATI Catalyst driver or support libraries. So if I understand correctly, ConferenceXP is not involved at all here, right?
Between Vista, WMPlayer, and the video card driver, it's a wonder that anything works. :-) I imagine it is hard work trying to get them all to agree.
Do you have the latest approved drivers for your video card and Vista?
JVE
Thank you for the answer,
Yes, I have all the latest drivers (ATI Radeon X1600 from Jan 25th). The error message from the Windows Application Event Log indicates:
Faulting application LifeCam.exe, version 1.30.175.0, time stamp 0x458712d1, faulting module UpdateRes.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x458713c6, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x02a3b5ed, process id 0xa78, application start time 0x01c74b40d94cda55.
Does it run all right under ConferenceXP or does it break there also?
JVE
fwiw, switching from an NX-6000 to a VX-6000 solved my problem completely. I have the VX-6000 running in Vista Ultimate 32, and it works very well with ConferenceXP. (Radeon X1900). This isthe same machine/os/cxp instance that would not work with the NX6000.
Thanks, John.
I don't have an NX-6000 yet, but it is on order. Then I will work to get the problem resolved.
JVE
Hello!
The ATI Catalyst connection rings a bell. I'm running ATI Catalyst V2.0.2519.38216 and downloaded the LifeCam v1.3 Vista driver to run under Ultimate 32 for the NX-6000 (what is the platinum connection?). I followed the installation instructions faithfully (i.e. do not connect device until drivers are installed).
During every restart LifeCam driver reports an error and nothing works directly but Skype 3.1 recognizes the video but not audio in the NX-6000. (I'm ignoring the nag for Live Messenger).
I'm willing to try suggestions to support further diagnostics. Let me know.
Thanks.
I have similar problem with Vista x86 ultimate & VX6000. Although camera works in messenger the LifeCam application doesn't and I get this exception after it tries to connect:
Unhandled exception at 0x0344b5ed in LifeCam.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000000.
- I have the same problem with the exception 0xC0000005 but I am using a VX-3000 Lifecam. I called Microsoft support but they don't have an answer yet.
- I have the mobile version of the lifecam 6000 and recently installed Vista Ultimate. Ever since, Live Messenger DOES NOT work at all. I have tried the original drivers, 1.2 and 1.3, none of them seem to work. This camera worked perfectly with Windows XP, now it does not work at all, i would just like to get it to work, any help would be greatly appreciated. I have the Lifecam NX-6000, Windows Vista Ultimate, and currently have Lifecam 1.3 installed. Please help.
Hi Jason,
did you get a chance to test Vista+NX-6000 combination? I have this camera, and get exactly the same error in ConferenceXP...
Yuriy
- This really blows! A Microsoft NX 6000 that doesnt work with Vista.
Hmmm, If Microsoft cant make their own hardware work how is 3rd party going to do it.
Is anybody else tired of this?:

---------------------------Hey you guys,
I have alerted the LifeCam team and they have read through this thread. I will engage with them beginning of April if there isn't a resolution in place before that.
Thank you all for your feedback.

- Same problem here... Just got my VX-3000 today. Checked the web for the latest drivers (1.3) and installed them. Plugged in the webcam, did the basic setup, and Lifecam crashed. Rebooted. Still crashes. Searched the web and found lots of threads regarding the same problem (but this one is on the MS board, so I figured I would pipe in here).
The only good thing is that Messenger Live works okay. So, I have 25% of a web cam right now. If only I could get 75% of my money back... - I'm having the same problem. no support for nx6000 on microsoft site, and when I phoned microsoft they said it was a problem with vista and that I needed to phone the manufacturer!!! I don't think so.
- I have just fixed my issue with my webcam i uninstalled Nero burning rom and it fixed the problem.!! Simple
Hope this helps somebody
Max Hello all
It did, Max. I run a VX6000 on my laptop with an intel integrated graphics chip and Vista Ultimate 32bit. I experienced the same problems you all did. The cam works fine in Live Messenger but the app just crashes with no real reason.
After uninstalling Nero 7, the problem is no longer present. I didn't even reboot allthough the uninstall procedure of Nero requested it. I just removed Nero and all is fine now.
Thanks for the post, Max, I would have never thought that up myself ;)
Regards,
Alex
- I don't have nero 7 and never have. I wait for a reply from the lifecam team!
I can beleive this. Microsoft OS and Microsoft hardware..... all new and they dont work.
I purchased this expensive notebook webcam $99.99US last month and it worked fine with my Windows XP. I now plug it in my NEW Vista machine and presto..... nothing but trouble... works, does not work......does not shut off..... mic does not work correctly..... just a pain.. Come on Microsoft! We paid good money for this stuff.... Fix or give me my money back.

Max- Try the following if BSOD etc.
Open web cam go to Audio and Video Settings
Webcam setup Options untick Auto box on USB Bandwith Settings Aoto Mode control . Set at lower than 8 Save and exit .
Or access via webcam settings in WLM..

jjeYou obviously have a different webcam. Audio-Video settings do not have anything remotely resembling what you describe. What is WLM?
The software with the camera is Microsoft LifeCam
On Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, the camera and software function normally with no errors whatsoever.
However, under Windows Vista the following error manifests itself:
First time run - camera detects and starts ok, resolution and dashboard function normally.
On second run, camera capture window blank, no video at all.
On warm reboot or cold reboot into XP, the system will work once, then fail in a similar manner. On second runnig of LifeCam.exe, If clicking Resolution Settings or LifeCam Dashboard control, the following error message is produced in a popup window.
From my previous (limited) experience, this would appear to be a section of the program failing to unload on exit, therefore producing an exception triggering a premature exit routine. Debugging has no effect, and the program closes.

Like the posts of many in this and other threads, I think Microsoft are taking us for a ride - what with the cost of a Vista Ultimate Upgrade (£280 UK,), plus the cost of the Lifecam NX6000 (lots compared to a Logitech Cam which does work - a colleague uses one on an identical machine), I would think that the support teams would get their act together and ensure that the Microsoft Hardware works with Microsoft Software. After all, how can other manufacturers get it right when Microsoft can get a perfect record at screwing up?
To mess up takes a human, to comlpletely mess up your day takes a computer running Microsoft Software and Hardware.

- i really can´t understand why microsoft is not responding. that´s a shame. i´m totally dissapointed.
- well i dont know y u guyz having problem...mann i have windows vista home and microsoft cam NX6000 and u know watt...vista didnt even ask for drivers....i just opened my messenger and it worked good...later to use dash board i downloded life cam 1.3 and everything is working just fine...i never had problem with it...well check out ur copy of windows is Genuine....its must to make microsoft hardware work with vista...still if u have any problem...locate microsoft office in ur area and give them a call....i think u all have right if u spent money to buy Genuine microsoft softwares.
- well... do you really think that all the people here have no genuine microsoft software... i am using vista ultimate... all genuine... and it doesn´t work... and there is no support at the microsoft website for nx6000...
I don't know whether to take the above post to this forum seriously - is the poster suggesting that Microsoft themselves are selling dodgy software through their accredited resellers, or that we are all a bunch of pirates buying software and kit off a market stall. Microsoft limit their "free" product support to two incidents per item, and if you want to raise an incident on the Microsoft Website and register for email support, you cant, cos the Lifecam NX6000 is not listed, and without the correct product listing, you can't proceed bcause you can't enter a valid product ID for listed products. Great Idea, Microsoft, just poor implementation and lack of forethought - or is it case of "well, we have had no complaints so far - it must be working ok". A valid point if you have the mechanism in place to be able to report a problem. Get it sorted, for under consumer law, you are failing your customers.
So, Peacekeeper, why post to a forum reporting problems with compatibility between Microsoft Products, if you have no problem. My Genuine copy of Vista Home Premium, AND my GENUINE copy of Vista Ultimate AND my GENUINE copy of Vista Business all have problems with this piece of kit, and its not the camera ' cos it works fine under XP, and we have tried SIX different cameras - there IS a compatibility problem - with the software under VISTA as it currently stands.
Interestingly enough, every Logitech camera we have tried, that has Logitech provided Vista Drivers works straight out of the box! Thereby hangs a tale.....

- I had similar problems with the NX-3000 and Vista RTM but it seemed to be caused by Nero. On a system where I updated Nero from their website, the problem went away. Also, on a laptop without Nero installed I never saw the problem.
I wouldnt like to state categorically that Nero is not the problem, or that removing Nero is the definitive answer to this problem, but I cannot see how Nero can cause a problem with my particular setup, as I have never put Nero anywhere near the computers I have running Vista - all the indication are that the Vista software drivers for the NX6000 are broken - it works once, then will only work again after a hard reboot. Yet this problem does not occur with Windows XP - its simply another case of Microsoft jumping the gun and releasing software which is untested, patently ill designed and does not do what it claims to or is supposed to do.
Still there were enough warning signs - every release of new Windows Operating Systems has been plagued with the problems associated with drivers, and some companies appear to be investing time, money and effort into developing for the new environment. Sorry Microsoft, but you can't go on ignoring this. If you claim that a product is "Vista ready", then that is what it should be. If the LifeCam is not Vista ready, then you shouldn't claim that it is. I for one would not have spent money on a Microsoft product that didn't claim to be Vista ready when I knew full well that the computers it would be installed on are all running Vista. Call me naive, but when a Microsoft Product claims to be Vista Ready, then one is justified in thinking that since the Operating System and the drivers for the product are supposedly developed by the same company, then there is a high chance that the item will work as claimed. It is not going to be long before the camera is packed up in its box and taken back to where it was bought (yes, I did buy it, not pirate it, and all three versions of Vista were purchased and are genuine licensed copies), as not fit for purpose. At least the consumer has protection under English Law.
I suppose we all have to take some proportion of the blame, as no-one forced us to buy Vista, when (at last) Windows XP had developed into a sort of (more) robust environment.
Heres to hoping it wont come to that.
Peacekeepar you a presuming we have illegal versions of Vista !!! Why ? Are you some kind psychy weirdo? Why would it not work on a illegal version? Do you have one and tried it?
My camera works fine with XP but will not work in vista. That is the problem..... Nero is NOT the cause....
Microsoft has in NO way helped us out here....
Vista Home Premium OEM legit..
Just for my 2¢ - I also have the same issue and its clear that the current drivers will not work within Vista. I am very disappointed with this camera not working and fear I will end up giving it away to one of our kids to use on their laptop which is using WinXP. No, apparently I can't put XP on this brand new laptop that I have. (Tough to explain, but Vista must stay on my laptop).
Funny thing is that the cheapo Logitech camera I originally had works fine in Vista, albeit without the resolution and features I was hoping to use on the NX-6000. Don't get me wrong - I think Logitech makes some great products, but the laptop camera I have from them really is a cheap version. I don't have the cash to run out to buy another camera right now, despite my strong desire to do so and turn this MS camera into a door stop. If I did, I would surely by a good quality Logitech. I won't buy another one from Microsoft.

All right folks,
I have been in contact with the LifeCam team. Below is their reply...
We have noticed that several users are using the Conference XP Community Site as a forum to discuss LifeCam technical issues. In order to best troubleshoot problems with LifeCam products, we suggest visiting the LifeCam Solutions Center at http://support.microsoft.com/ph/11859. If you are looking to have a similar interaction with other users, but in a forum dedicated to Hardware products, we suggest visiting the Hardware Newsgroup at http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.mshardware.product&cat=en_US_a8bc369a-5b15-4bb0-a772-f459abd462b1&lang=en&cr=US
And with that, I will lock this thread so that others can view it but no more posts will be allowed.
