At work I am running Vista Enterprise. When i connect to my WHS I am always getting an error message "

There is a problem with this website's security certificate.

The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority.
The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address.

Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.

". Anyone else seen this? is there a way to get a valid cert for WHS website. Yes I can click on the continue link, and proceed without any issue, but is kinda of annoying.

Sure. The easiest way is from the Vista computer.

    1. Navigate to the WHS secure Web site.
    2. You'll see a padlock icon next to the address field. Click this and click View certificates
    3. Click the Certification Path tab.
    4. Double-click the root cert (looks like a GUID).
    5. Click the Details tab.
    6. Click the Copy to file button.

    This starts the Export Wizard.

    1. Copy cert to the target computer.
    2. Double-click the .cer file.
    3. When you install the cert, intall it to "Trusted Root Certification Authorities"

We'll make this topic a whitepaper sometime after the product ships.

It's the same, Vista or XP. If you're using some other OS, you'll have to figure it out yourself. Smile

This is by design. Home computers with the Connector software installed have the server's certificate automatically installed during Connector Setup. Computers without Connector installed don't have this certificate and thus the Vista message.

You can either export the WHS cert and import it on the Vista computer, or you can purchase your own certificate and install on WHS.

DocGuy,  that sound like it might fix the issue. Only thing is I do not see a specific certificate designated for WHS, or WHS web. have any idea which cert that I would need to export?

It would be nice though if MS would provide / offer SSL certificates for registered WHS users using livenode/homeserver dyndns. At the moment I quess it will not even be possible to obtain a certificate for dyndns type domains (Perhaps this is not possible at all. Anyone?)

I am unable to replicate the steps you have listed in my x64 Vista ultimate box -

I can get steps 1-3 done no problem, but then step 4 is where I ran into a problem.  With the security settings set to medium, it wasnt even a option to install the certificate.  I disabled "protected mode" and then I was able to install the certificate without any problems.

But now I have a different error - when I goto my site...*livenode.com, I the certificate says "This certificate cannot be verified up to a trusted certification authority." Which is a different message then I got before.   Do you have any other advise on how to try to correct this problem?

    Thanks!

Tried your install on an XP machine with console already installed. Did not work. Still get the same page as original poster.
My IE7 does not have a lock next to the URL when I go to my Livenode address. . Instead it has a red box and says "certificate error."  I then tried again installing the cert from there in the directory you suggested and in the default directory it chooses. But no luck.

    Any other suggestions?

I am getting the same issue. I wonder why WHS does not ship with a cert. Because i doubt a average user is going to know how to do this or know what to do when that happens.... =P Heck i dont even know what to do lol

This doesn't work for me either, it simply comes up with the "untrusted certicication Authority" type error...

I agree with the view that MS need to provide a cerification authority for these certs, or at least provide an easy way of acquiring a certificate that can be authenticated when accessing the server remotely.

Same Problem Here and when looking at the certificate in IIS on WHS it onlt shows the local name of SERVER and not the domain name as well. What is the problem? It seems to me that some people had the certificate install correctly and others did not. But I do not know enough about this to say for sure.

I get the certificate error when going to the site or using RDP (even from a pc that I have ran the connector software on). How can I fix this?

There has to be a way to edit the certificate so this does not happen. Unfortunately, I have no idea and everything I read in these WHS forums makes it seem that if you have ran the connector software that it will all work fine. Or rather that if you have installed the WHS connector software that the certificate should be installed at that time and as a result no certificate errors will occur.

    Help!

Okay, for those of you who were always having an issue with the certificate not working correctly even on machines that had the connector software installed try the following.

    1- log into WHS console

2- open up the settings window

3- go to the remote access section

4- under domain name click on unconfigure (that will unassign your domain name, but do not worry)

5- under domain name clickunder domain name click setup and go through the set up choosing the same (or different if you want) domain

At this point when going to the site you may be fine, if not continue

6- go to the your WHS website (xxxx.livenode.com) and if you experience certificate error then install certificate.

All should work well now. It worked for me and for my friend who is running WHS. Hope it works for all of you.

What I'd like to see is the Cert be issued with the CN and friendly name properly filled out.  I did two installs (don't ask) of WHS and it installed two self-issued certs with long digits that I only figured out came from WHS by looking at the issue/expire dates.  I deleted the one I knew was no longer valid, because I don't like to have stale data around.

At least an indication that it was issued by WHS would be helpful, especially if you need to be doing cert-related troubleshooting, instead of thinking a rogue app decided to install a self-signed root cert with god-knows-what security implications.

Unfortunately this simply doesn't work for me.     The Browser on my "work" PC simply won't allow the certificate becuase it was not issued by a recognised authority, and nop amount of "fiddling" seems to solve that problem...

I will carry on trying to make it work, but from previous experience of this error its not likely.

Per DocGuy (1.5 years ago), this error message indicates that everything is functioning as designed.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
