Is there an LLTP responder availible for WHS (or Server 2003) so that it shows up correctly in the Vista network map?

In fact you can do this with a few tricks.

Download the lltd responder for XP from the MS site (google lltd).

Run the exe on your 2003 system (32bits only).

Ignore the error that it will not install on your version of windows.

Do not (!) press the "ok" button of the error message but leave the messege present as it is.

Search the root of your drives for a folder which should look something like:

    "3f7606ace822823472222756a0e12dbb"

In this folder you will see the extracted files of the setup.

Copy the contents of the folder to a temp folder of your choice, except for the $shtdwn$.req, as it is in use by the setup.

After you copied the files you can click the "ok" on the error message and the setup folder disappears.

Go to your temp folder where you extracted the files.

In the update folder go to update.exe properties.

On the compatibility tab choose windows XP.

Run update.exe and the LLTD services installs like a charm.

Now you will see your 2003 servers in Vista.

Happy tweaking, but use this at your own risk !

I search everywehre. I can't find anything. I even google it and come up with nothing. So I guess no. However I could be wrong.

I don't see an LLTD responder for Windows Server 2003 on the Microsoft download site. If it's not there, it probably doesn't exist.

There is not one at this time. But there is an open suggestion on connect that you can vote on. just search for "LLTD" or link layer and you will find it

OK, I tried this and it does not work for me.  Did I miss something?

I followed your instructions and it installs.  It shows up in the add / remove programs as an update.  However it does not show up as a protocol in the Local Area Connection Properties as it does in XP.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Hi Steve,

Try to go to the properties of your network card.

On the "general" tab choose install.

    Select "protocol" and "add".

On the list you now get choose "have disk".

Browse to the folder with the extracted files and go to the "\SP2GDR\ip\  folder.

Select the "inf" file there and you'll see the lltd.

Press ok and see if it is present now.

I had this problem once too and this fixed it. (only after I already runned the setup before).

So this is not the way to alternatively install it as far as I know.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    FYI...

Worked great for me too. Thx Phil!

For the faint of heart, I've posted streamlined step-by-step instructions (along with pictures) on my HomeServerHacks.com website:

Worked for me - but I had to use an XP machine to unpack the exe first, and locate the files once it paused at the licence agreement. It wouldn't unpack on the server 2003 itself - just stopped with the 'wrong OS' message, but no folder to be found.

Hey Bart, great tip.  Many thanks.  Purchased Vista Business at the weekend & couldn't get lltd to work.  Now working great.

Tried the same tactic with my XP SP3 rigs but no joy.

I know this is an old topic however, I must clear something up in efforts to prevent others from wasting time trying to get LLTP on Server 2003.

    XP SP2 Users:
The regular LLTP download file off of the Microsoft website can be used.

    XP SP3 Users:
Go to the Microsoft website, search for LLTP and look for the "hotfix" (at the top) section.  You will click on a link and be asked for your e-mail address.  You will then receive an e-mail with the link to download the file and a password to extract the file, on the bottom of the e-mail.

    Server 2003 Users:
Download the regular LLTP download file off of the Microsoft website and follow the steps posted by others, on this thread.  If you try to use the LLTP designed for SP3, you'll be frustrated that you cannot get LLTP on your MS 2003 Server due to a bad file (*br) error message when trying to install.

If I knew all this before I installed LLTP on my XP SP3 and MS 2003 machines, it could have save me quite some time.  I always try to find an answer!  :-)

Yay! All PC's on Vista Network Map :-)  Hmm...Was it really worth it?  LOL
