AnswerCan no longer remote login to headless WHS server: Error regarding remote login being expired...

  • Monday, April 07, 2008 2:26 AMJoe_Robin Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

Starting today, when I try to log into my WHS box, I see the following error message:

"The pre-release version of Remote Desktop Connection has expired. To download the full version of Remote Desktop Connection, go to Windows Update or contact your system administrator."

I see the same message from 2 different XP SP3 computers on my home network. I see no Google entries pertaining to this error on WHS, nor is the MS knowlege base any help.

I performed Windows update on my XP box, no critical or non-critical updates are available. I also connected a monitor to my WHS box, and performed any outstanding updates (these did not automatically download then apply themselves, which they were supposed to, but that is another topic for another day).

Any thoughts on how to fix this? Since I am supposed to be able to perform ALL admin tasks remotely, to have the remote connection no longer work is troubling to say the least.

Oh, multiple reboots on each box were performed.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Try uninstalling the beta version of SP3 you have installed on your computers.

I didnt think there was a release of XP yet with SP3 built in but if you go to Add-Remove Programs, you should have the option to remove SP3 without uninstalling Windows itself.

That did the trick...I uninstalled SP3 and after a restart I was at SP2....Remote Desktop seems to be working again...

Just to clarify, I got my XP SP3 image from my MSDN subscription....it didn't say RC or anything else next to it so if figured it was the official release....guess not....

It worked great....2 issues were DST (my outlook calenar had been 1 hr off up until today) and This Remote Desktop issue....other than that, seemed to work ok...

    Thanks for you help.

I followed the first advise on the replacement of the files. It is best to copy them from the unistall folder if you have them. You also need to move the chm file. Simply run a search on your windows folder to find all mstc files. Sad to say another one MS let slid through the cracks. Sad This will hinder many people come monday.

    Sincerely,

    Awgcomp

    Hello Everyone,

Windows XP SP3 RC2 Refresh was recently released (2/27/08). You can install the new Release Candidate Refresh and it will correct the Remote Desktop Connection issue.

    You can find the new Windows XP SP3 RC2 Refresh here;

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=114F3599-12AF-42B2-AAB1-B969A62C68A7&displaylang=en

    Here is a copy of the announcement of the new release;

"The Windows Serviceability team is pleased to make available Windows XP Service Pack 3, Release Candidate 2 Refresh (XP SP3 RC2 Refresh).

The purpose of RC2 Refresh is to validate improvements to the Windows Update experience with Service Pack 3. Therefore, this beta release will be available only on Windows Update, in English, German and Japanese. Beyond fixes for common Windows Update issues and the inclusion of support for HD Audio, there are no substantial differences between this beta release (build 5508) and XP SP3 RC2 (build 3311).

XP SP3 RC2 Refresh includes all previously released updates for the operating system, similar to earlier service packs. It also includes previously released updates to the latest versions of some system components, as well as functionality that make it easier for enterprises to co-manage both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista PCs within same corporate environment.

While this update is available for anyone, remember that it is pre-release software, is time-limited, and is intended for IT professionals, developers, and other technically-inclined individuals that are comfortable using pre-release software.

The application to enable download of XP SP3 RC2 Refresh is the same application as was used to distribute XP SP3 RC2. This is an application that can be found at the Microsoft Download Center. Running this application on a machine with Windows XP Service Pack 2 will enable Windows Update to offer XP SP3 RC2 Refresh to that machine. Build to build upgrades are not supported for this beta release, so if you have installed XP SP3 RC1 or XP SP3 RC2, please uninstall it before running this application. We strongly recommend that only this application be used to obtain RC2 Refresh and that evaluation and feedback be based solely on releases provided directly by Microsoft.

As with RC1 and RC2, we encourage feedback on XP SP3 RC2 Refresh via this TechNet forum. Information regarding XP SP3 overall can be found on the Windows XP TechCenter. Windows XP SP3 is scheduled for release in the first half of 2008.

Thank you very much for your feedback to date! We look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards,

    Windows Serviceability"

Note: Although the announcement indicates that you will need to uninstall XP SP3 RC1 or XP SP3 RC2, I had no problems installing the XP SP3 RC2 Refresh over the existing installation of XP SP3 RC2.

Yes it worked for me too. I copied these two files mstscax.dll and mstsc.exe (located in C:\Windows\System32) from a Windows XP machine having SP2 installed. I replaced these files on my PC (Same location). It worked. Before doing this I backed up the same files from my PC to another location.

    Thanks !

    Hi,

I've tried the suggested solution - installing the refresh but it didn't help.
The RC is still complaining that it expired.

Just to confirm - that copying the mstscax.dll and mstsc.exe worked for me also - (I copied them from the uninstall folder in Windows directory) but I had to switch of the system restore for this.

I replaced the files under Safe Mode and it's working fine for me.

When i tried to replace these files into normal mode then windows replaced them after 2-3 seconds with the originals (sp3 files)

I noticed this problem when I came in to work today.  I did not preform the work around (copy/paste) yet but I simply set my system date back to yesterday, 4/6, and my RDP client is working again.

I just hope that few of my users have installed sp3.

    DelArm,

I had the exact same problem. I had to copy over 2 additional files from the XP SP2 computer. Both are .mui files located in the c:\windows\system32\en-us (replace en-us with whatever your local language is).

    The files are:

    mstsc.exe.mui

    mstscax.dll.mui

Copy them into the same location on the SP3 computer.

I clean my HDD regularly, including all "$Uninstall...." folders in Windows directory.  Consequently, "...remove SP3..." not an option.   Any other thoughts?

I just replaced the to files mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll without going into safemode and it worked fine also. Thanks for the info!

Then you're really going to have a problem when XP SP3 goes RTM (it will require any beta version of SP3 to be uninstalled beforehand).
