    Hi,

I want to stream MP4 video from WHS to my Xbox360.

As WHS only comes with Windows Media Connect 2.0 I need to install either Windows Media Player 11 or the Zune software in order to stream my MP4's.  The problem is that both WMP11 and Zune installer refuse to install on WHS as it is Windows Server 2003.  The compatibility tab did not help as it only has a WinXP setting and not WinXP Sp2, WMP11 and Zune state they require at least WinXP Sp2.

Does anyone know how to trick WMP11 or Zune software to install on WHS?

    Roger

I think there is a way to trick WHS to install WMP11, but the Xbox360 will not play MP4 video.

You will find a (completely unsupported, use at your own risk, don't cry in my beer if your WHS burns up  ) hack to install WMP11 here.

The Xbox 360 does play back MP4 video. That was part of the most recent dashboard update.

Windows Media Player 11 doesn't seem to stream MP4 content (at least not in a way I'm aware of) and the Zune software can't be installed on a Winodws Server system.

I'm using TVersity to stream 720p content in MP4 to my Xbox 360 (I know it's not transcoding them because I have a lowly 1.2Ghz processor as my WHS box)

Has anyone tried to just install the mp4 codecs to see if it will stream?

Most of the time you dont need other software to play the format, you just need the codecs.

    Hi,

In order for WMP11 to stream MP4 video to the XBox it needs to appear in the WMP video library.

If you install a MP4 DShow filter like 3ivx MPEG-4 5.0.1 Decoder ($7) from p://store.3ivx.com/3ivxStore/product_details.php?id=11 then MP4 video will be shown in the WMP11 video library and then you can stream it to the XBox360.

I now have this working on WHS, sweet!!!

So if I were to install WMP11 via the hack, will that allow streaming of Zune marketplace music to the XBox 360??

Yes, I have a Zune Pass and I installed the Zune software 2.3.1338.0 on the WHS. All of my subscription music streams perfectly to the XBOX 360's media blade (not the media center extender part). When you install the Zune software on the WHS, remember to 1) add the WHS to the list of computers in the settings 2) you will need to play all of the song on the WHS first so that the subscription license (DRM) gets copied over to the WHS 3) start sharing to the XBOX 360 4) on the XBOX 360, change the music source to the WHS (the one with the Zune logo).
