Unanswered WHS OEM Now Available

  • Wednesday, August 15, 2007 5:23 AM

Just had a phone call from the local MS supplier today on Wednesday 3.45pm 15th Aug ( New Zealand) I was advised that WHS OEM has arrived in the warehouse today and will be available tomorrow morning to pick up( thursday).

So going by that is should? be available world wide as OEM sooner than later.

I may have missed this but with the release of WHS OEM imminent is it now accepted that there won't be any discounts available for beta testers?  I'm keen to get my hands on the final version and, whilst I have never expected payment of any kind for beta testing, the reward as so many others have said was getting to play with the software and to be part of it's development, I'm an expert at jumping in and buying things at full price only to discover I could have saved myself a few quid if I'd have just asked.

Also like to say thanks to everyone involved with this project, to the other beta testers who helped out with answers and suggestions to all our problems and queries no matter how small and to the team who have brought WHS from the design table to production good job guys. I look forward to being involved in the next Microsoft beta project.

I've fallen for the same trap wilbur1969 but I think in this case the message is pretty clear. And my OEM too is being shipped tomorrow (also NZ) so roll on the weekend!

My congrats too to the WHS team and thanks to all forum members, especially those who answered my often dumb questions. Vista was a tough beta. This one has been a dream and personally one of the most satisfying and useful bits of software I've adopted in a long while (and I was pretty happy with my old XP-based P2P LAN - but WHS is brilliant). Well done, all.

damm i hope it shipps thursday i would hate to have to wait all weekend just to have it turn up on monday Smile

good timing also as my eval runs out at the end of the month due to the timebomb date bug.

looks like the next week of so will be an interesting time around here as people start installing the full version.

Has anyone heard any info on WHS in the United States?

NZ/AUS already has pricing, and apparently shipping today/tomorrow, yet here in the good ol' US of A (home of MS), we got nothin'?  I may have to consider moving down under soon... Wink

You've got to remember, they are 6 months ahead of us due to the fact that they are "below" the equator, and it is winter there now!

@Ben - eBuyer.co.uk says "All going well we should see stock of this product towards the end of August 07" Sad

However, Terry Walsh in the WeGotServed blog says "I’ve just had confirmation from a reseller here in the UK [bluesolutions.co.uk] that they’re expecting delivery of the Windows Home Server System Builder software in the next few days. Release was scheduled for August 1st, but has been delayed slightly."

EYO Dropshipping has it for AU$230, ETA 18th August here

I've bought stuff from EYO and they have been really good, but I have yet to buy from their dropshipping site. The dropshipping site is where you buy it and it ships directly from the supplier. You'll likely get a warning saying the certificate is wrong as the site is www.retailing.com.au but addressed for EYO Dropshipping; it is not a dodgy site though.

Don't take this the wrong way but I am dumbfounded how a US based company would release a product overseas before releasing it here in the states.  I'd figure at least the same release time or earlier...not later.

I have found nothing online from any US reseller.

    Very odd indeed.

Well, if you believe this site: http://mswhs.com/ , then it is not sure when whs will be available in the US.  I'm not sure why MS would do such a thing, but each his/her own.

This is some more info from the site:

    UPDATE Windows Home Server Availability

We have the latest information for you about the availability of WHS.

    • New Zealand - Today (16 August 2007)
    • Australia - 18 August 2007
    • UK -  22 August 2007

My estimate of 15-21 August 2007 for the first release of Home Server was correct with those of you lucky enough to live in New Zealand getting their hands on a shiny copy today. As posted in the Microsoft WHS Forums, Wayne Delany had this to say:

“OK just collected it direct from the Suppliers :  Here’s what’s in the Package.

    • Home Server DVD Product code etc
    • Recovery CD
    • Connector software CD
    • OEM Preinstallation Kit CD
    • Mountain of instructions - Booklet as per the download product information/instructions etc, Licence terms, as well as additional instructions for setting up / problems eg: storage Drivers adding drivers etc.”

America, Germany, France and Spain have no confirmation dates as yet. We shall have to wait for more details.

    Hi,

I'm not sure why MS would do such a thing, but each his/her own

Maybe they to waitting for thier channel partner like dell, hp.. etc, to annouce the product first.

I am as you, hoping to install it today than tomorrow, but seem no option at the moment than to wait.

    My best.

WHS is listed on Microsofts OEM website as an active part number, that means it is available for distributers to order. It is up to the distributers to "get it on the shelves", not Microsoft. Also, in the US anyway, these are wholesale distributers, who will not sell to individual customers, so a reseller like Newegg has to order from the OEM Distributers ( there is only a few ) and then re-sell to the general public.
  • Thursday, August 16, 2007 6:18 PM

Than where is the priceing? Surely they have that.

  • Thursday, August 16, 2007 6:28 PM

Microsoft does not publish thier pricing to the public, again it is up to Newegg how much they mark it up and sell it for. The OEM Distributers don't give access to thier pricing unless you have an account, which requires a long application process with a fee ( 100.00 for the ones I checked into).

The rep at newegg suggested it may take up to two weeks for home server to arrive on their site.

Too bad MS is not offering as a download... that would make more sense for people like us.... after all the majority of us did download the beta and pre-release versions.

But that is just me being a big baby.  Let me go cry myself to sleep.

I am sure that MS probably has agreements with their launch partners to allow them to anounce/offer the solution first. This may be the reason for a slight delay. I for one am also chomping at the bit. I am more excited about this product more than Vista. I already have it running, I just wat it to be official. So patiently I stand by

I am anticipating the US launch of WHS as much as anybody.  But, the prices I saw on the NZ website were pretty steep!  $283 NZ = $195 US

    Ouch!

Doesn't mean I still won't buy it, though. Stick out tongue

Anybody have any word on whether this will be in the MAPS in the future?  I doubt it will, but it would be nice if it was. Smile

If my experience with AUS pricing (I lived in Sydney from 2004 - 2006, heh) holds true, I'd expect WHS in the US to be ~$149. I think that would be a good price... $199 is a bit steep, but still purchaseable. I guess it comes down to Newegg.

    $149'd be real nice, though...

  • Thursday, August 16, 2007 10:52 PM

$283nzd includes 12.5% tax. $250nzd is a more accurate figure to convert.

Also New Zealand at the moment has an overvalued currency, making US, UK, AUS price comparisions a bit steeper than normal. Basically it is(was) a very good time for NZer's to buy from US, UK, etc.

I too would expect a $150 US price for WHS if not a bit less.

    Cheers

    DB

I'm pleased with the UK pricing at < 90 UKP including tax (though the exact amount seems to vary on eBuyer!)

Yes, it's wierd isn't it that the Ebuyer price has changed three or four times already?!

I reckon they are monitoring the hits on that product page, and the more it gets, the more they shift the price up a little due to 'demand' Wink

Well took delivery of my copy here in New Zealand on Friday 17 August and did a new installation over top of my previous test system. Install looks much more consistent now, without the SBS 2003/Server 2003 bits "showing thru" the install. There are still a couple of reboots required (may have been three - I was watching TV while installing) including a non-graphical text only stage partway thru while files are copied. Install allows you to complete it without activating which I have done, because I want to make a few changes to my configuration. You get 30 days to activate, the same as in beta and RC installs.

Now, to investigate what has changed.....

hopefully going to put it together tonight/tomorrow etc.

one interesting thing to note is the outside packaging designed for system builders has the following wording

    if you open this package:

Each individual software license inside this package may ONLY be distributed with a fully assembled computer system.

Sure you can (although as Crash pointed out, it's apparently no longer necessary to even do that).  All that means is once it's been opened, it MUST be distributed as a whole computer.  Since wherever you bought it from didn't open the package (I hope Wink  ), that line doesn't apply to them and they can sell it to you as software only.

I'd sit tight for now, and wait until they have stock and set their final price. The e-buyer price seems to be changing daily at the moment, but this is a big leap! I'd be surprised if the final price was so out of kilter with the rest of the (non-US) market, but we'll wait and see.

Agreed, Terry - I've been hanging on waiting, but the £=$ price would not be new Sad

The other UK supplier (at present) Blue Solutions is still quoting £78.63+ VAT, but their T&Cs of course allow for the price to change "to those current at the time of order", ie when the item becomes available.

The only Australian shop I have found so far that ships internationally (and has WHS) is ASYS (their faq says so here). But be aware the Australian prices are higher than the US prices will likely be, and you'll pay through the nose for shipping (not to mention you'll wait a while for it to get to the US- 10 day shipping from ASYS to the states looks to be about AU$70 or roughly US$60). But I can't deny the feeling of wanting it ASAP.

I live in Australia so usually it's the other way around - trying to find somewhere in the states that ship internationally. Usually I decide it's too much hassle and wait for Aus release.

One other thing though, I have got the RTM version that is shipping in Australia and it says on the box that it is

LICENSED FOR DISTRIBUTION ONLY TO SPECIFIC COUNTRIES WITHIN ASIA-PACIFIC

so you may not be able to source one from Australia or New Zealand due to this- you can probably e-mail them (ASYS) and ask if they will ship WHS to the US (or whereever). I have not bought anything from this store before, so I don't know what they are like with answering e-mails and shipping orders.

    Good luck,

    Davo

Every package of MS OEM Software I've seen was marked what region it is intended to be sold in and this is one of the things that MS enforces. My guess is that MS isn't releasing it in North America to system builders until HP has a chance to finalize their product.
