AnswerUnable to send email from windows mobile 6.1 device

I'm using a samsung i900 Omnia running windows mobile 6.1

Using POP3 to receive messages without problem. but fails to send every time, giving an error of:  "The message(s) could not be sent. Check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct. Then try sending again"

No anti-virus or popup blockers. Just using the native mail client of Windows Mobile 6.1

I have followed all the configuration instructions to the letter, and can't seem to figure out what's wrong.

When that occurs, there is probably some small error in the entry when you set it up.  I would suggest that if you cannot see the error, delete the email account and set it up again .... it is usually the fastest way to get it up and running.  Also check in the setting that under the Outgoing (SMPT) mail server that the Outgoing server requires authentication box is checked and that you click on the advanced server settings in case there is an option you need to check.

    Hi,

Many of us have seen this error with every build so far of Windows Mobile 6.1.  Personally I've seen it with every build released for the HTC Kaiser with no additional software installed.  Just to clarify, the error only occurs during a send/receive when an outgoing message is present.  After the error occurs once it will occur every send/receive while a message is present in the outbox.

There are many fixes posted on the net, but you are correct that creating a new account is the only way to fix it as long as the new account is given a unique name (no need to delete the old account though).  The bad news is that this fix is never permanent.  Even when no changes are made to the account's configuration, the error will always come back eventually.  What causes the error to return is a mystery.

It hasn't been our experience, however, that an incorrectly configured setting is the cause.  I, and many others have tried every possible combination of settings to no avail in finding a cause.

Do you have any other information on the cause of this?  Does MS have a response?

    Thanks for the help!

Interesting comment FZ1.  With a myriad of devices that I am constanly using, testing and evaluation I rarely have an issue in setting up three different email accounts but on that rare occasion that I do, it is easier to delete and re-enter the information carefully.  BTW, I have never had a case that once it was setup that it did not work forever.... until the next Hard Reset to clean up the device

I too have this same problem.  I have an HTC mogul.  I know the settings are correct because about 20 minutes ago I sent an email out not problem.  The next email I typed up a few minutes ago gave me the "The message(s) could not be send.  check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct.  Then try sending again."  Absolutly nothing changed in those 20 minutes.  I am in the same spot, haven't monkeyed with the settings seeing as it was working.  The only fix I have found has been to delete the email account and start over again.  I have to do this about every 7-10 days.  It it very annoying.

It is like a phone with windows 95, 98, et al on it.  Never works quite like it should.

I would agree that it is annoying!  I can't help but think it is not your device but rather your service provider because you can send and nothing changes on your device.

By some chance do you have a different email account you can test?

HTC Mogul (Sprint), with the exact same issue. I've just upgraded my ROM to 6.1, used the exact email settings I've been using until now, and I'm getting that same error after the third or forth email I send after creating a new account.

At first I thought I'd need to reset the device, but after that didn't help, I created a new account which seemed to work. But after sending a few emails, the same thing's happening.

Is anyone aware of any fixes from Microsoft on this? This seems to be happening to quite a few people to just brush it aside.

    Thank you,
    Leib

Hmmm, so when you start an email and click on Menu/Insert you pick either Picture, Voice Note of File then click on the file and you can see the attachment in the email .... correct?

So the issue occurs as it is sending?  Is there a message or error code given?

Also having this same problem and no matter how many time or different ways I try to set up my email I still cant send emails. I can recieve no problems but I cant send. Im on a HTC Mogul WM 6.1 and didnt start having this problem until I upgraded to WM 6.1. With so many people having this problem and different phones and Im sure all with different email providers. Id have to say that this is a Widnows Mobile 6.1 issue. Id like to know if anyone has found a fix for this problem and if not is Microsoft working on a solution?

My guess is that if you can receive and NOT send that there is a log on error.  Did you choose to use the same user name and password for sending email?

At least for my setup, I have Gmail IMAP for receiving, then I have Godaddy's relay servers for outgoing. The username and password are correct, proven by the fact that after recreating the same account, everything works just fine, until...

It is possible, that larger emails are more likely to trigger this error, but I'm not sure.

    Thank you,

Just 'error synchronizing' and it statys in the out box

And I just found that if I turn OFF save attachments to memory card (When available use this storage card to store attachments) it works.

Interesting, I also have the "save attachments on storage card" option checked. My sending is currently "working", but when it goes bad again, I'll give your suggestion a try.

Ok, for me, taking off the option to use storage card, doesn't help.

May I suggest yet another possibilty? While typing the message I had my screen viewing horizontaly, with the keyboard out (HTC Mogul). Right after clicking send, I realigned the screen by pushing in the keyboard. It took a few seconds until it oriented itself, and then I got the error. Is it possible that no other processes may intirupt the sending process?

    Thank you,

    Leib

I too have the same issue.  I am using a Motorola Q9h and after upgrading to 6.1 this started happening.  I currently use 2 email accounts (POP3 & IMAP), I can send emails for a while and then both eventually stop sending.  The emails get stuck in the outbox and I get an error messages that they can't be sent. It seems as suggested the only way to rectify the issue is to delete the account(s) and reenter the account information.  I called Microsoft about this and they wanted $35 dollars to dicuss this with me, an error caused by their software.  I then called Motorola and they had no better answer than send the phone in.  I then called my provider (AT&T) and they had no answer other than get a Motorola rep. on which she told me the same thing as when I called earlier.  I can't understand why Microsoft is not working to correct this as it seems to be a rather prevelent KNOWN issue with 6.1 yet no one knows about it and has nothing to offer other than check your settings.

On the surface that sounds valid but remember that Motorola made changes to the released OS then AT&T made a few to fit their needs.  Is it Microsoft's fault ... if it was occuring on every device I would say yes.  In this case I tend to lean towards Motorola or AT&T.

    Just my thoughts....

This is the second Motorola related post today I have looked at.  Both referenced IMAP accounts.  So my question is this:

If you delete the IMAP account, does the issue still exist with the POP account?

Well I must admit I am a little pissed about the issue but regardless when I turn on the phone the splash screen Windows 6.1.  Also if you read the other posts and search on this issue it is happening to more different phones than Motorola's and different carriers then AT&T.  So I still thinks it's pretty valid that Microsoft should be working to resolve this and by no means do I think AT&T and Motorola should not also work on the issue. In my case none of them were able to help.

The IMAP account actually is my work account, so now I have not deleted it and left the POP account alone. I really need the IMAP available to me. Either account will stop being able to send at different times so I will delete whatever one stops sending and then reenter the my email settings to have it working again and whichever one I have left conitinues to be fine until some later time.  Usually it takes 5 days or so for one of the accounts to stop working.  This has been going ever since the upgrade became available in mid-August.  I spent 3 hours on the phone earlier tonight trying to get a resolution and as in my earlier post to no luck.

I found one thing that has helped me twice so far. The first time after getting the error message, I closed Outlook Mobile completely by holding down the "x". I then restarted Outlook Mobile, hit send/receive and it went.

I can also tell by now when the error will hit. After "logging in" goes "connecting", then goes "receiving folders" then "receiving headers", if the phone hangs too long at "receiving headers" and you can also see there's no more network activity going on, it'll most probably end up with the error. At that point I would just shutdown Outlook completely, then restart, and it will work.

    Hope this helps,
    Leib

For the record I am experiencing the same problem and error message using htc TyTn II and Windows Mobile 6.1.

No problem receiving email from my Internet Service Provided email account but unable to send no matter what options I use to configure the email account.

I am using the same settings transferred from my Windows Mobile 5 device - very puzzling!

I have several HTC TyttnII on an orange contract, a replacement unit arrived a couple of weeks ago with WM6.1 installed. Within a couple of days the unit stopped sending emails but I could still receive. I defaulted the unit and it started to work again. The unit has now stopped working again, after lots of digging on the internet it appears that there are a lot of people having the same the problem with WM6.1

The remiaing units are all running WM6.0 all on the same pop3 account with no problems at all.

Come on Microsoft there has to be a solution for this.

I have an O2 XDA stellar. No problem with either POP3 or IMAP Gmail when I was using WM6.0. Problems of recurring sending errors propped up after I upgraded to WM6.1.

Thus, I would single out WM6.1 as the culprit. Please advise.

Please realize that in 6.1, Outlook would automatically send emails after creating a new email, whereas in 6.0, you would either do a manual send/receive or wait until the next interval. I think this has something to do with this new feature (it's not a bug, it's a feature!).

Has anyone received an update in response to this issue? I'm having the same problem with 2 business clients that utilize POP3 on their devices. Cannot send, get the error as stated above after upgrading to 6.1.

I've been having this problem for months now, and it is clearly a bug with WM6.1 which I installed on my Kaiser about 6 months ago. WM6 did not have the same problem. The issue is nothing to do with user/pw errors, as I can happily send emails one minute and then 5 minutes later I can no longer send. It happens with my own personal SMTP server, with GMail's SMTP server, and via Wifi or GPRS. As you can see, there is no common link here - only the fact that MS's mailbox functionality is clearly broken.

I may try a 3rd party mail app, such as Flexmail, but I don't see why I should have to pay for functionality which should work on a device like this.

Microsoft, what action are you taking to resolve this? When can we expect a patch? This flaw is a serious one, and it's very irritating (for example, I've had to delete and recreate my email account on my device eight times this week already.

Of course it'll be irrelevant in 4-6 months, as I'll be moving to Android. I really have had enough of MS's shoddy attempts to write a mobile OS (and WM7 doesn't look like it will be any improvement).

I've been following this thread having experienced a similar probem with my O2 Stella and Win mobile 6.1.

When using Pocket Outlook I am unable to send emails using WIFI or mobile web; receiving email is not a problem.

To investgate further I first tried a copy of FlexMail - it allows you to test your connections which is helpful when setting up mailboxes. Using FlexMail I am able to send and receive emails with a WIFI connection from home. However, when away from home I am able to receive email via mobile web or a WIFI hotspot but sending emails results in an error - 'The server does not accept a message due to a problen with destination mailbox. Server response: "Demon SMTP service not available from 82.132.136.211"............"

It would appear that when using FlexMail the 'problem' with sending email is at my ISP end. The server rejects email sent via the O2 mobile webserver presumably to ensure that email posted to my ISP SMTP mailserver originates from a machine connected to their network. This would make sense to avoid people misusng the mail server for spam mail etc. Provided I only send mail when using a WIFI connection at home I am able to send and receive email without a problem. FlexMail gives you the option to send and receive email indenpendently which is helpful when not connected to my home network.

In conclusion, there does appear to be a problem sending email using Pocket Outlook in Win Mobile 6.1, it does not matter what configuration I use it is not possible to send email. Using FlexMail I am able to send email via my ISP mailbox but only when connected to my home network.

I have not spoken to my ISP, but it may be possible to configure my mail account to accept email sent via the O2 mobile web server.

    Regards

    Kevin Hunt

Having upgraded my Kaiser to WM 6.1 just prior to the weekend, I too have joined the throng of those with a distinct inability to send emails from a gmail account that has been working fine on WM6 for months.  Have tried POP and IMAP servers, with the same results.  Have re-imaged twice, still the same results.  Might fail on the first message, or may allow some to work, but so far eventually a message will fail to send.

Webreaper: trying third party software hasn't so far fixed the problem for me.  Thus far I've had a similar issue with Seven, emoze & Emansio.  As you can see, I've had quite a boring weekend really...!

Since the only other WM 6.1 feature that I've noticed so far is the better synch of contacts with my Parrot car kit, I'm wondering whether to downgrade to WM 6 again...?  Anyone know where the Orange image is?

Any word from Microsoft on this undocumented featurette yet?

In my experience, FZ1's comment is 100% correct. I am on my second HTC Mogul (Titan) w/ Sprint, and I consistently have the same experience. Email (gmail) will work perfectly for weeks after setup and then one day, it decides it doesn't like one of the outgoing messages. From that point forward, nothing corrects the problem with the exception of deleting the account and setting it up again. It is extremely aggravating and I highly doubt anyone could convince me that it is not a bug.

Actually that statement is partially correct from my side. The two business contacts I mentioned in my note above have both spent $400 a piece and bought iPhones at an unsubsidized price JUST so that their e-mail would function again. I would say that's "doing something" about it.

Needless to say, I don't think I can ever get them to go back to WinMo devices again. I'm about there myself, Microsoft hasn't responded to this issue on ANY of the channels I've used. Are you happy Microsoft? Losing customers and not even acknowledging the issue.

I found an inelegant and to me undesireable work-around here: http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-POP-and-IMAP-en/msg/7b08f1660ef0e99f?pli=1

It requires you to setup 2 accounts in the pocket outlook. With it you can send email, but not reply through the IMAP account. Not good enough for me, but I wanted to pass it along

Ok......I have this happen to like only one of my imap google account and not the other.

I have seen this happen when I send a message from am area when I am roaming and I am out of reach with my ATT net work.

A quick fix is to use (if you have) the Network Wizard. This will look automatically at all your network settings and update them, It will restart your phone and all work again.

This you probably have to do again once you're back in your area.

And of course it can also just happen. I still use the same fix. (deleting the mail account and creating a new one did not work for me)

JRM- I have the same phone and recently (last week) upgraded to mobile 6.1 and thats when my problem started!  I too, did not change any of the settings and all of a sudden i could not send emails.  I have tried deleting and reentering the email accounts that i use, does not help me one bit.  I am going to do a hard reset and go back to the previous version which i know works ( since i upgraded to this phone 11 months ago).

Same problem here.  At first I thought it was simply because I had the SMTP server wrong, but then I remembered I had tried it successfully when I first got it.

HTC Touch Diamond on Telus Mobility sending email by Shaw.ca SMTP and same error.

The culprit's obviously Windows Mobile as it's the only common thread for everyone having this.

    ****

I continue to drive this issue hard internally and it has received executive level attention. I am asking for a date for a CAB. You can inform user's that they will not need to flash a ROM update to WM 6.1.4 but they will receive a CAB-installable update that fixes the problem. The big question remains, "When?"

In the mean time, here is a bit more about the cause: This was a horribly unfortunate side-effect of adding a feature to 6.1 designed to help ensure users can send mail on Operator networks that do IP filtering and block sending e-mail via an SMTP server that is not on their network. We introduced an OEM/Operator registry key override in 6.1 that specifies a backup SMTP server. Business logic was added that attempts to use the backup SMTP server address when the user-specified SMTP server address fails. If the backup server address succeeds, it becomes the new default. The bug occurs when the OEM-specified registry key is empty and when sending via the user-specified SMTP address fails for any reason at any time. Once the device gets in this state, SMTP fails without recovery for the account. (Although, Matt, you said you were able to send again by flipping SSL/Outgoing authentication settings. We didn’t see that.) This explains why users hit the bug only sporadically, and why recreating the account solves the problem (if only temporarily – until the next SMTP failure).

It is incredibly unfortunate that this was not caught in testing, nor during the extended Beta period for 6.1, nor in our TAP program, nor by internal “dogfood” usage of 6.1, nor during Mobile Operator trials. It took us weeks to identify reproducible steps even when we received your device and focused on it in August! This is an especially bitter pill given that the feature we added to help ensure sending success (for a known blocking issue on some mobile operator networks) is the very feature that introduced sending failure. Of course, the Outlook Mobile Team is dismayed, disappointed, and determined to make it right, and so we are driving the issue very hard internally.

By the way, the registry key noted above is an OEM-protected key. So while end users cannot add or edit the key, it is possible that the Mobile Operators could OTA-provision the key with an SMTP server address that works on their network and this may well solve the problem. I am asking the team that added this feature for us to investigate if this will work as an additional mitigation. Regardless, we will develop a communication plan to Mobile Operators that they can distribute through their support organizations so that when user’s call with this problem they get an appropriate response. It pains me greatly to hear the testimony of users that are trying in vain to get their problem solved and I will do everything possible to drive a rapid response on this issue.

Matt, thank you again for finding it, making us aware of it, sending us your device, and for posting about it.

Hopefully, I’ll send you an update again tomorrow when I get a response from the sustained engineering team on a timeline.

Just to add to the growing chorus of complaints about this issue, I have the same problem on my HTC Touch, WM 6.1, Sprint.

    "
"The message(s) could not be sent. Check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct. Then try sending again."

Sprint Tech Support replaced my phone even though I didn't have insurance because they thought it was a network issue. The problem started again on the new phone two weeks later.

Aiyeheheyaiheheyaiheheyaiheheyaiheheyaiheheyai! Yah I'm lovin' this M.S. problem. I must be the only one out here with a htc 6800 (TITA100 using MSIE 6.0) that has experienced this "challenge". This phone has the 03.37.20 radio upgrade thru alltel rom version 3.35.671.9. On this otherwise lovely device today gmail stopped sending & recieving although I can of course go online to it. In the lower bar "error synchronizing" also briefly appears after the rediculous "the message(s) could not be sent. check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct. then try sending again.". In the last few hours "verizon-good-customer-service-is-a crime" also failed however with no message. (Imagine that...verizon...all of your employees are stalking your customers...on T.V.) Anyway for an insensitive man with no friggin' patience this is an issue. Please fix it now...please... & don't imitate Ver-lie-zon which provides polite but infuriatingly inaccurate lipservice. Thank you for your time & have a fantastic evening!

This worked for me. Initially the mail in my outbox would not send after I accomplished the registry edit. I deleted everything out, started a new message, and this time it went:

    1. Add the reg key “Operator” to \\HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings
    2. Add the reg key "OutgoingServer" below Operator key.
    3. Add the reg val (reg_str) "OutgoingServer" below Operator key- “ButtonBoy rules”
    4. Soft reset

    found here: http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/2008/09/18/windows-mobile-6-1-smtp-issues

    more explanation:
    1. Install a registry editor such PHM Registry Editor. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/1...6-wm5-and-wm6/

    2. Use it to edit the registry according to ButtonBoy's instructions. \\HKLM\ refers to \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\. His step 3 means "add a registry value (string) to \\HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings\Operator\ and this registry value has the name "OutgoingServer" and it's Value data is "ButtonBoy rules". Of course you can put something a different Value data there instead of "ButtonBoy rules" too!

The registry hack doesn't work for me, as I still will get the message that emails cannot be sent. However, after shutting POutlook completely, and reopening it, it usually does send.

I am having the same problems sending email from my Motorola Q9h with Windows Mobil 6.1., would send pop emails for a while and then have a problem!!!.....same problems as Leibtek poster....used to own Motoroola Q bought in Nov 2007 with windows 6.0 but when got the Q9h (AT&T) over the summer, then i started having problems "sending" email through pop.  For pop email, I am godaddy customer and have my own domain and they host standard pop acccount. But had problems sending through Gmail pop too. Sending email would work for a while but after a few emails outbound, it would give me an error message saying to check for coverage, message couldn't be sent.  Some times i could go for several days with no problem. Occurs on AT&T 3G network and others.

I have been through several replacement Q9's from the warrenty department, (i think 3) so i think this is my 4th q9h in 3 months.  So you know that means that i have been through tech support the same number of times all the way to level 3 (data support) doing all recommended things to no avail so they just send me another phone.

It may have something to do with how much stored send messages get built up on the phone, at least my phone.  Last night i unchecked a box that has to do with storing sent email messages on the device, So, far so good but i need the ability to send messages from my "sent email" folder to another person so not having a stored copy at all is not a long term solution.

I am not convinced this is even a short term solution but whatever the problems are they are based in:

    1) Windows Mobil 6.1

    2) if using 6.1, (no problems on 6.0) possibly affected by how much stored data is in email cashe

I have a question:  In case this problems returns, anyone know how to restart the email thing (like Leibtek using HTC) but for a Q9H?  Pressing the "x" key doesn't do anything on a Q9h.

I have having the exact problem on my new HTC Touch HD using the supplied Pocket Outlook. I switched to Flexmail and it works fine. Had the same issue with my last phone which was the HTC Tytn II (ATT Tilt). Also used Flexmail and it was fine. All this points to a Windows Mobile 6.1 issue!

It looks as if I may have suffered from a similar problem as I was unable to send email attachments. This solved the problem:

    Tools

    Options

    Send (and on same menu)

    Mail Sending Format

HTML Settings (same again for News Sending Format)

    HTML Settings (new menu)

Click - Send Pictures with message

    OK - Apply - OK

I hope this works for some of you.

Regarding carrie input on the problem:
I have an HTC Kaiser which I purchased with the factory settings in tact. I experience the same problem. As this appears to occur whether it is direct from the factory or from a large number of carriers, I lean towards Windows mobile being the issue. Hopefully windows can come up with a soultion as well because it is EXTREMELY bothersome.

Does the Hotfix work, or is it a HotWasteOfTime?  Is Flexmail the only answer?

I've got an AT&T Tilt running Windows Mobile 6.1 (which was installed on the phone when I purchased it a few months back) and I've been experiencing the same problems as everyone else it seems.  I setup my POP3 email account for my personal domain email when I got the phone.  Sometime thereafter I got the "message(s) cannot be sent" error message.  Looked for solutions online including changing the outgoing smtp server to the cwmx.com one as recommended by iPhone users.  That worked initially, but the error message always inevitably returns.  I was able to delete and recreate my email account on the phone which is working now, but is a HUGE PITA.  My last phone, a Cingular (HTC) 8125, NEVER ran into problems with sending via smtp.  This is absolutely ridiculous and I am AMAZED that no one from Microsoft has addressed this via a CAB update.  HELP ME MICROSOFT...YOU'RE OUR ONLY HOPE!!!

I am having the same problems using mail client on 6.1.  Is it possible that port issues could be the problem on sending out email from my phone?  One of my accounts uses port 80 for SMTP, another has secure access using port 587.  There are no settings for this when setting up my accounts.  Is there a third-party client that can be used instead of mobile outlook?

What is the latest on this cancerous and painful issue. Almost 3 times a week POutlook refuses to send a particular message for no known reason. Everything gets stuck in the outbox, till this msg is removed after which all get sent fine.

I have identified this particular message. When replying or forwarding it, it stays in outbox and sending fails afterwords. There are few lines in this msg, if deleted, it will send fine. All these lines start with '-' character. So, having 2 copies of this msg, once contains '-' lines and the other does not, the formal fails to send and the later goes through fine.

All these failures so far occur when replying/forward a specifig msg. I know the reason has to do with the contents of the message more than anyting else as the evidence above is suggesting.

I shared this findings on with POlook mobile team on their blog, but am getting no more than deaf ears.

Can anyone confirm or share their findings.

I use Treo800 with 6.1 and the MS Hotfix applied. None of these issues occur using FlexMail on the same device. So,. it is got to be native outlook issue.

    Thank you.

For those of you who posted recently, you may not be aware that a solution was posted on page three of this thread. Look for the link to a Microsoft hotfix at the bottom of page 3. I just installed it and it appears to be working for me now.

The first attempt to install using the "msi" file did not work -- it restarted my phone when I simply touched the screen and had not pressed either the "yes" or "no" command. So, I downloaded the CAB file and placed it on my phone and then installed it from the phone. Worked great.

THANK YOU Microsoft for figuring this out. I'm just surprised my new HTC Fuze didn't come with the hotfix already installed, because I just bought it last month, and the fix was released in November. It's a little lame to expect us to experience this problem first, then to have to search for a solution, then to install the solution, when it could have been preinstalled before selling the device. But hey, at least it's working now.

I know this thread is abit old, but I thought I would post here just in case.

I am using an HTC Touch HD from Orange (UK).  The official hotfix won't install for me.  Apparently, as Orange have altered the build number with their usual little 'tweaks' the hotfix thinks it's not applicable and I get an 'unable to install due to OS Version' error.

The reg hack also does not work.

I've currently been on hold with Orange (UK) for 17 minutes (and counting).  I'll post here if I get any joy.

I applied the hot fix, all is well for now.  I'm crossing my fingers.  I wish my carrier knew about it though, after being on support with them for like an hour, they had me re-create the account.

When it happened again, I decided to do a search.  Don't know why I didn't think of it the first time.
