hi guys, i'm running vista ultimate 32bit and everything's been cool with the t-mobile wing, syncing with outlook 2007 and everything, but 3 days ago it stopped working, meaning windows mobile device center JUST WONT OPEN! no matter what i do, i hard reset the wing already, i reinstalled wmdc, i had to restore from a backup image of my laptop and then it worked, but after two restarts it stopped working again
whenever i plug in my wing, device manager shows that it detects a usb smartphone mobile device but wmdc wont start, i click it from control panel, nothing happens... The program just wont start... please help
Answers
- I did today.
Vista Home Premium 64 bit upgraded to Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
I found that I would get a continuous loop of crashes if I connected my device to the computer. I couldn't start WMDC at all. It would immediately crash.
I uninstalled WMDC Driver Update (I believe this is 6.1). On the original WMDC I clicked on repair. Then I reinstalled the update. This fixed the problem.
I got the upgrade from Microsoft's web site.

- Samething happened to my Treo 750 and HTC Kaiser. My last successful sync was Oct 5. I think Microsoft may have messed something up in automatic updates. I still havent found a solution
You said that you "i hard reset the wing already, i reinstalled wmdc, i had to restore from a backup image of my laptop ". My guess is that the issue, what ever it was was brought back from the reinstallation of the backup .
I might have tried going into device manager, and removing the device.
Disconnect the device, delete the partnership from WMDC and the device then reboot the PC and soft reset the device.
Now reconnect and establish a new partnership.
Just my thoughts.....
- We can't delete partnerships or do anything with WMDC because it will not even start
So on your PC, in all programs, can you start WMDC?
- No, I have uninstalled and reinstalled 6.1 and 6.0 WMDC many times. And it still will not start. The only progress I get is to got to Control Panel>WMD and clicking it 4 times. The Please wait message appars, but then the exe file never coninues after a few seconds. (closes in Task Manager)
OK, with the device NOT connected, can you start WMDC from programs?
A green screen will appear and indicate nothing is attached....
- Nope still wont start
OK, from that answer, I am assuming it did appear in your programs.
So, lets try uninstalling WMDC, rebooting your PC then installing again.
Download a fresh copy and follow the instructions....
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx
Just a little extra reading here:
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/wmdc/t-shoot-wmdc.htm
look at 2, 3, and 7
clos, I'm assuming you are trying it. It is very late here so I am going to hit the sack but I will check on this in the morning....
Good luck!!
- Still no luck. It still wont start up
- I have the same problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled fresh copies of WMDC and it still refuses to open. I had been using the program sucessfully for two months prior and one day it just stopped opening, Suggestions?
- Yep exact problem here to. Using Vista Ultimate and one day WMDC failed to launch exibiting the same symptoms styx1029 described. The event log displays the following error;
Failed to start the Windows Mobile-based device connectivity service due to EnableRAPIMgr(0x80070005) failure (see data for failure code).
I have installed and reinstalled several times but no change.
Can anyone help????
Thanks,
Mike - Ohhhh Vista. So this is some problem with Vista itself and I had to restore Vista back to a previous save point. Now that I have done that it wont install 3 updates that Vista dowlnoaded even after I completed all of the troubleshooting! Hooray for Vista. Try doing a restore or if you have an acutal Vista CD (I didnt) there is supposedly some repair option in it. Good luck!
- Hi all,
I found this forum having suffered the same problem. I have a work around that will get you going - I hope.
Well this worked for me.
I have Vista Business on an HP/Compaq nx7300 and sync to a Pocket Loox 510/520 WM5.0. This stopped working a couple of weeks ago. I found that if you go to c:/Windows/WindowsMobile/ and then run setup.exe if starts the sync action. I am in early days of testing this, but it seems to work so far. I have just made a shortcut on the desktop to click each time I want to run it (if you don't switch off it seems to allow disconnect/reconnect).
Hope this helps.
Mark - Jeez! Same problem using vista ultimate. Get a fix Microsoft!!
- Interesting work-around Mark. Thanks for sharing it.
I just wanted to let you know that I have been dealing with a similar issue. I just purchased an HTC S710 smartphone running Windows Mobile 6. I'm syncing over Exchange for my calendar, email, contacts, etc. but I needed to get PC syncing to work so that I can install programs/applications on my phone that I need for work. Since I'm running Vista which no longer supports ActiveSync, I did some online research and discovered that I needed to install Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) instead.
I should point out that Windows Mobile 6 contains ActiveSync (obviously to support XP) - it's an icon right on the phone! But it took me a half hour of research on the internet to figure out I needed WMDC.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx
I clicked on the link to "download" and "run from current location" and everything seemed to work fine. However, after it had installed, nothing happened. I couldn't find the app anywhere in my Start menu. I checked in the Control Panel under Programs and couldn't find it there either. In the Start menu, I typed "Windows Mobile Device Center" - ah ha! there it was...
But when I clicked on the application, I just got an error message "Windows Mobile Device Center has stopped working". I attempted to uninstall/reinstall, but WMDC doesn't show up on the Control Panel. I rebooted my pc and looked again. I reconnected and re-paired my phone with my pc and tried to sync again. Again, I got the error message.
I went back up to the site and re-installed WMDC. Again, nothing happened. Same error message.
Mark's thread above pointed out that I should create a shortcut to the actual exe from its location at C:\Windows\WindowsMobile. I checked out this folder, and guess what, WMDC had never installed correctly. I clicked on setup.exe and got it going.
This may seem like a no-brainer, but the average user would assume that installing the program from the windows mobile site above would take care of all this - and not expect you to have to dive this deep into online user forums to figure out how to actually install WMDC and get it working. This was pretty frustrating, and a not-so-productive use of my time.
OMG!! I was starting to think my tech guy was just starting to rebel because I dont prefer his presence in my office! I started having problems with my sync shortly after allowing him to touch my equipment and have banned him since. Now that I have upgraded to Ultimate- Mobile center won't open, my sync is acting oddly and my computer is acting like it has a 'y' chromosome. In fact, ATT got so tired of my husband and I calling for their support in this, they replaced my 8125 with a 8525 and although the problem seemed temporily better (although the time wouldnt function well until I did a few other tweaks), mobile center wont start and windows shuts down telling me that it will tell me when there is a solution.
I guess its kind of relieving to read that its not just me, my phone, or... at least a real solution may be in the works. XP wasnt reliable until sp2. theres still hope.- I too am having the problem.
No matter what i try, short of reinstalling Vista, i cannot get the WMDC opened or the service started. I am getting the same errors as the others in this thread. Has anyone found a solution for this yet?
I was working on another vista problem and fixed this Windows Mobile Center problem with the same solution.
The solution:
Run in a cmd prompt:
net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service

I am telling you all Vista Windows Mobile and WMDC are not compatible with each other. I should know. I have a Treo 700wx with Windows Mobile 5 trying to connect to Vista Hom Premium 32-bit and I have had a very few connections where nothing went wrong. The stupid Treo recently has been telling me every time I want to sync that I need to run ActiveSync 4.1 or higher on my PC. It has gotten to the point that hard resetting the Treo, unistalling WMDC, restarting Vista, and then reinstalling WMDC MIGHT get me connected to do a back up for 2 minutes and anything more than that then I am lucky. Anyone know where the complaint department is. I got quite a few.Whew ... I can feel the pain all the way up North SthrnDixieCwgrl!
I have a Treo 750 (upgraded to WM6) and a Treo 750 (WM5) and both have worked with Vista Home Premium and Vista Business.
I have heard that error you mentioned before but I have not seen it (nor do I want to see it on my computer). Was your PC upgraded to Vista?
- The error message that said I needed to upgrade to ActiveSync 4.1 or higher was on my Treo 700wx. I didnt upgrade to Windows Vista Homw Premium (32-bit) came pre-installed when I got it back in December 2007. I still cant get it fixed.
This guys is a genius, I have had this problem for many months and after typing that command, BOOM it works.
Thanks a ton.
I have tried this prompt but it gives me an error
-System error 5 has occurred.
-Access is denied
I run Vista home premium...
Any advice?
I have tried to run the prompt but it gives me an error

I run Vista Home Premium

You do not have permission to run this command. Make sure you log on with an account with administrative rights.
I was logged on with admin rights, however it when I turned off UAC user account control, it allowed me to make the change.
Thanks for the reply.
But unfortunately it didnt help the damn WMDC still just shows not connected altough i am now connected to the phone.
The search goes on...
Next time windows brings out a new product i will be the last to convert.
Same Problem "Windows Mobile Device Center Has Stopped Working"
I've managed to run the cmd prompt also. NO LUCK!
Apple is looking better every day. I'm no pc wizard, and it seems that every time I fix one problem with Windows, a new one pops up... and often it seems that THEY caused it with some stupid update that I instantly wish I'd not have downloaded!
The new Apple Computers with OS X 10.5.1 Leopard on them can be partitioned to run Leopard AND Windows on the (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html). Might be something to look into.

- Thanks for passing that along Xandrius. It is good to hear a success story!
I followed the instructions described in the link in that message (Right click on 'Computer', 'Manage', etc....) and it began working properly again. My question is, what made it break? It was working fine. Which update destroyed the necessary files or settings in the first place. I've always allowed updates to happen automatically. I guess I've been lucky - I haven't had that many instances of an update causing a failure. I've had Vista Ultimate running on a Lenovo T61 since August, and up until two weeks ago it was purring along just fine. Then, during an unannounced update, I tried to undock to go to a meeting. 10 minutes later, it was still not allowing me to do so, so I tried to shutdown. 20 minutes later, it was still shutting down, so I crashed out of it - I had to go! Well, it destroyed the computer - couldn't even boot up.
Wow. Automatic updates are now shut off.
Of course, with all of the recovery features built into Vista and Lenovo's Resue and Recovery, I thought I was covered. This was the first 'puter that I did not create a set of recovery disks for. BIG mistake. Lenovo had to create a set and ship to me. Two weeks later (with a computerless weeklong business trip in between) it was completely back to where it was prior to the crash.
I will say this about R&R, it allowed me to boot up into it, map onto my eSATA drive, and pull all my personal files and data off the HD. But be forewarned, if you try to reload Vista ont a drive where it's already installed, it generally won't allow you to do so. You need to reformat the drive first, erase all the data and overwrite with all 0's, before it will allow a re-install.
My next purchase will be Symantec's Ghost, and I will image the drive on a regular basis.
BTW - 1TB external drives with USB 2.0 interface are now under $300. Blows my mind that storage is so cheap. Nobody should be without one and a grand backup scheme. Lesson learned.
Also, I've heard that Vista SP1 has (of course) numerous fixes for a whole host of ills. Let's pray that they get it right.
Peace.
BZ
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium
I have tried the command prompt. No Luck.
I have tried the sequence listed in the link mentioned before, but when the "Computer Management" window comes up, there is no option for "Users and Groups".
I am not as PC savy as many others, and have had absolutely no luck at all.
No matter what I try, Windows Mobile Device Center does not work. As soon as I try to do ANYTHING with it, it crashes.
AUGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Clint, on my PC, it was listed as 'Local Users and Groups'. Could be a differnece between Home and Ultimate, or during the initial setup you may not have enabled the machine for multiple users. I dunno. Don't give up - I'm sure there's a solution for you. Maybe SP1 will fix your ills. I hear it's due out the end of this month.
Peace.
BZ
Clint, when you connect your device to your PC, do you here a "beep" indicating a device was connected? If you wait a few seconds, do you hear a second beep?
If you go into Device Manager with the device connected, can you find your device listed? How many times?
As an example, my device will appear in two places: Portable devices and Network Adapters. Under portable devices it is listed as Windows Mobile based device and under Network adapters it shows Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter
If I disconnect my device, those two items will now NOT show. So you will know you are looking at the right items if it disappears when you disconnect.
Regarding running:
net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service
I ran this command and it does fix the issue indicated by the following error in eventvwr:
Failed to start the Windows Mobile-based device connectivity service due to EnableRAPIMgr(0x80070005) failure (see data for failure code).
However, I don't feel comfortable giving "Local Service" administrator privileges. Isn't this a reduction in my system's security? I will run this way as a workaround, but it seems to me that WMDC and
EnableRAPIMgr have some bug that is preventing them from running in the proper context. This needs to be addressed by the WMDC team.
(There is another thread running on what appears to be this same issue, but offers no solution:
I'm making a reference from that thread to this one)
-R
Fixed It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I uninstalled WMDC... Completely! Every trace of it I could find, even deleted the shortcuts, it's name from the start menu, everything!
Then prodeded to install WMDC 6.0 instead.
6.1 will not work on my system, but 6.0 does.

Sir you are a god damned GENIUS to say the least!!!
URL: http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?postid=1185469&siteid=17&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=9- LOL. Thanks for the kind words but really it was pure dumb luck that I ran accross it.
I've really had bad bad luck with Vista and my Windows Mobile device. I've switched to a blackberry and LOVE IT. - Well, I think I've tried all the tricks listed in this forum and the referenced links
- uninstall WMDC, reboot, reinstall
- Add Local Service user to Administrators account
- Remove WMDC, remove %windir%/WindowsMobile (had to go to some lengths to get this removed), reinstall from web page
And I'm still not able to run WMDC. Here's the error:
Windows Mobile Device Center has stopped working

I'm getting close to doing a fresh install on this Vista x64 installation and just rebuilding all my apps from scratch (it was fine until I tried to install SP1 which made it unbootable and when I reinstalled and then restored from a backup this and other issues came up). Well, it's been a *real* learning experience (with 2 days of neglected work -- so far). Maybe I'll knock off a couple of days of work and then reinstall. No more SP1 for me, that's for sure!
Bill Hi
im still having problems with "apple mobile device helper has stopped working"
this started when i updated my iphone software to newest v.
Can you walk me thru the process of fixing? im pretty "noviced' with terms..
THANKS!!!!!!!

- This seems to be another User Account Control Problem. Installing iTunes (after first uninstalling the old version)with the UAC turned on works. No messages about the mobile device helper. As soon as the UAC is turned off, however, the annoying dialogue box appears every 8-9 seconds, though it does not interfere with synchronizing either the iPod Classic or the iTouch. I had exactly the same UAC problem with a Franklin Covey Program for Outlook when I first got the Vista system. The FC program worked with the UAC on,but not off. Since Quicken required just the opposite (UAC off) to access its data files, I opted to keep the UAC off. I am the only user of my computer and I need access to Quicken more than I care about the FC program. As I recall, Adobe Acrobat needed the UAC off in order to download and install, so it seems clear that some programmers do something that demands one thing or another of the UAC, while other programmers write programs that are independent of the UAC status.
In the case of iTunes and Quicken there is no easy way out because I want easy access to both - and turning the UAC on and off (Go to Control panel, User Accounts to find your UAC) requires full system restarts. I tried to post this answer on an Apple forum site, but in typical Apple fashion, the registration page couldn't recognize that I had filled out the form. In the meantime, I am appealing to Intuit to see if they have a solution for Quicken's difficulty with the UAC - at least one can send them a a message (if anyone knows how to send Apple a message, please feel free to forward this.) - One more thing.....after reading the Wall Street Journal description of MobileMe, I realized that it may have been installed with the latest version of iTunes. Sure enough, it is was in the startup file, and when I unchecked it, the mobile device helper message disappeared from iTunes, even with the User Account control turned off.
You can find your start up menu by typing msconfig in the search box, clicking on the icon that appears, and then navigating to the start up file. I unchecked a number of other programs that had been installed with downloaded software, including iTunes itself. I'm OK with manually starting it. - I wonder whether the problem was solved. If not try the following:
After upgrading to Vista Ultimate you may get the error "Windows Mobile Device Center has stopped working" with "Problem Event Name" of "CLR20r3". To rectify this problem:
1) In registry, HKCU, Software, Microsoft, Windows CE Services, Partners - delete any folders (this destroys all partnerships)
2) Uninstall BOTH Windows Mobile Device Center items in Programs
3) Reboot
4) Reinstall Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 (download 32-bit here)
That should do it. Wow, this PDA sync problem has driven me nuts and damnnnnn have I spent some time trying to figure it out, way to many hours spent, I almost converted to an Apple just to keep my sanity but finaly i found the golden rivet that fixes this problem
what you do is unplug your pda
goto systems device centre and uninstall the mobile device if you can see it if not dont worry
then goto prgorams and remove the windows mobile centre
then start the command line prompt ie cmd
then type in regedit
then goto software
then Microsoft
then windos ce services
ok here it is, delete all the folders listed
then exit
rebott your machine
attach pda
and setup the partnership
and continue and forget the hours if not days you spent trying to solve this problem and get your life back in order
I tested this on Vista Home Premium 64 bit and all is well
I reckon bill owes me a beer for my time on this one, grumble, grumble
ohh yes after you reboot your machine download and install the windows device centre from the following link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center.mspx#download
remember to choose your 32 or 64 bit version
enjoy your new found freedom

Thanks for the simple solution. I did myself a favor this time and read to the last post and tried the easy fix. It worked!- Proposed As Answer by2GrokMobileMSFTTuesday, April 28, 2009 11:42 PM
- Sounds like you have a corrupted install of WMDC. How did you install it to begin with - off of the web, or via a download from Windows Update?
Are you able to try this on another PC - I'm curious whether or not this is a conflict with the PC.
I'm investigating now whey those earlier solutions appear to work. My guess is that they are refreshing the WMDC installation in some form or fashion. - Another question - do you recall if there was an OS upgrade involved - possibly from Vista to Vista SP1?
Running WMDC as an admin just once, allows WMDC to create some registry keys that aren't migrated during the update. Once you run WMDC as an admin, you allow WMDC's installer to fix the keys, and they you should be able to revert to your normal priviledges.- Proposed As Answer by2GrokMobileMSFTTuesday, March 10, 2009 12:11 AM

Thanks Scrattdog,
net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service worked perfectly.
Here's my beef for any of you Microsoft guys listening. WTF? This was working fine up until sometime about 8/25/2009 for me. I'm sure this is the result of some update designed to protect me. You guys push out all these updates in an effort to "protect the user", breaking things in the process, refusing to provide any specific details, refusing to acknowledge the mistake, refusing to post a fix and wasting your customer's time. I've spent 4 hours (that I can't bill) tracing down this stupid problem, and the solution comes from a non-Microsoft guy.
I use my computer everyday for my business. Everyday. I'll say it one more time; Everyday! These issues cost me money.
What a friggin' headache
Greg Wilkerson- How do you turn off UAC user account control in Vista Home? I am logged in as an Admin and it won't let me run the cmd either. My WMDC does open and does connect, however it will not let me sync contacts. I can transfer picture files just fine so I know it's connected.
- thanks. This seemed to work for me running Windows 7 64-bit home premium. Hopefully, it keeps working!
Michael
