    Hi all,

I'm desperate. Since 2 days ago I haven´t been able to synchronize. All of the sudden, I'm getting the code 0x8503001C displayed in my device (HTC Touch). No matter what I do (delete and recreate relationships between pc and device, reinstalling WMDC, erase contacts, appointments, etc.), I can't synchronize anymore. I read on another post that the solution is to sinchronize using previous WMDC 6.0 (I'm using 6.1); but everytime I try to install this version, my computer re-installs the update, so I end up using v. 6.1.

    Please, any advice is welcome.

Seems like soomething is wrong on the PC side. We'll have to determine which item is causing this error. I suggest you uncheck all the items to sync and add them back one at a time until you get the error again. Let me know and we'll follow up from there.

I had the same thing happen last week. Found I had 3 e-mails greater than 200k each that were trying to fit onto my Ipaq. I first sync'd without e-mails and that worked then tried only downloading headers for e-mails and that worked. Deleting the large e-mails in Outlook before sync'ing and setting the size limit to 5k also worked. Good luck. TR

Thanks for your answers and suggestions.

After conducting some tests, I've been able to sychronize only mails, tasks and mobile favorites, but no calendar and contacts. So I guess the error must be in one of those. I would like to concentrate only in calendar for the moment, and leave contacts for later. I've been erasing manually and one by one the calendar data recently introduced (erasing it from Office Outlook in my PC), with no success.

This leaves me with the idea of "starting" a new calendar. Can this be done? I haven't found a way of deleting the default calendar and let Outlook rebuild a new one, so I can introduce new appointments (I don't care to loose my past appointments). Or, if this is not possible, is there a way to erase all the data automatically?

If I could resolve this calendar issues I then will concentrate on contacts.

Thanks for your help and advises.

If it were my device I would probably consider doing a Hard Reset to get back to a "fresh" device but many folks are hesitant to do that.  For me, it is easier to trouble shoot a clean device and more often than not, the HArd reset will fix the issue.

But I saw this piece that I thought you should look at and maybe give it a try:

    http://msmvps.com/blogs/nickwienholt/archive/2007/11/15/wm6-to-vista-sync-error-0x8503001c-fixed-by-going-back-to-wmdc-6-0.aspx

    Hi,

I will leave the HardReset as a last card to play  But i'm definitely considering that possibility.

In regard to the second option (go back to WMDC 6.0), yes, I thought of that but I have a problem: I unistall 6.1 (both the "update driver" and "Device Center"), then install 6.0 and for some reason my computer "re-installs" the latest version, i.e. 6.1. It is like I have somewhere a "backup" folder or a command somewhere that won't allow me to install version 6.0. I'm using Windows Vista.

Can you help me on this?  How can I install only and exclusively WMDC 6.0?

    Thanks again.

Thanks a lot! Now I can sync between my "new" calendar and mail, onenote, tasks, etc.

But the problem persists with contacts. This is more complicated because unlike my appointments, I can't loose my contacts.

What I need, I guess, is to make a copy of my contacts in office outlook and then erase all of them and begin to restore a significant amount of contacts, say 20, to see in which group is the one that is causing the support code. Can this be done?  i.e. my questions are:

    1) How can I make a COPY of my contacts;

    2) How can I RESTORE them by groups of 20-30?

    Thanks !!! I'm almost there !!!

We're going to proceed differently with the Contacts. As a precaution, let's make a copy. Open Contacts, select any one of them and press Ctrl+A on your keyboard to select all. Click and hold the mouse right button and drag to another contacts folder. Release and select copy from the menu. That done, disconnect your device and reboot. Reconnect. When Activesync is done synching, open it on your PC and click Tools - Options. You should see your partnership and the items to sync listed. Remove Contacts and let Activesync save your new settings. When it's done, add it back. Let me know if this helps.

Linley Meslier: THANKS a lot. I'm back in business . It didn't help to follow the steps you descibe, but the complete restoration of contacts, as I will explain later.

Let me say that this support code 0x8503001C is becoming very common, as one can verify it by searching in google. It is not listed in MS websites and not supported officially. After your help and my invested hours (actualy days!) trying to find out how to solve it without reverting WMDC to a previous version [6.0] (as many have suggested), the "error" code is due -this is my guess- to a wrong data in any of the "calendar", "contacts", "tasks", etc. information. Now, this data could have been, by some misterious reason, got damage through time. In my case, I found out that I had 4 contacts (out of 100) wrongly recognized or "wrongly written", which made the sync process to stop and therefore to not synchronize anymore. The funny thing is that those 4 contacts were previously recognized: that is a mystery.

Anyhow, to solve it I made a copy of all my contacts and THEN ERASED all the contacts in the original folder; then [device connected] I restored them by groups of 10. Most of the groups passed the test, i mean the sync process, but some did not: in them I had to restore the contacts one by one until the support code appeared, and that is how I found which one (ones) was (were) damaged. I marked the damaged ones (in the copy folder) and decided not to include them.

After restoration was complete, I introduced [wrote again, manually] in my device the 4 contacts that were kept out. Out of 4, 3 were accepted by ActiveSync, except one: no idea why!!!! It's a simple name with a simple mobile phone number (Go figure!!!).

Now I have a total of 99 contacts (is 100 a limit? ... who knows..) and no more 0x8503001c [fingers crossed]... I'll keep posting if I can find some other relevant information.

I HOPE MS could look closely to this so they, fingers crossed again, will deliver in the future a WMDC version more stable.

Regards and thanks again for your prompt support.

I'm not sure I really buy the 'just destroy everything, reformat and reboot' approach to making software work.  Sync failure is a multi-generational issue with Windows Mobile - from the very beginning.  Why there is no doubt it is a complex process, getting it right is a must.  Other platforms seemed to have mastered it.  When Microsoft, when?

I totally agree - to me it seems like kind of critical problem. I am in situation when I decided to stop syncing with contacts, calendar, email and tasks. I tried the way proposed below to isolate problematic elements but in my case it seems every third one brings "Attention required" error. I am not sure but seems my problems began since I upgraded to WM6 and ActiveSync 4.5. Needless to say it is frustrating Sad. Waiting for suggestions.

    Hi,
Same problem here. A HTC TyNTii gives the same error after an upgrade to a rom with WM6.1:

After upgrading to a WM 6.1 rom no sync with the Exchange-server (windows 2003 type)
    Error 8503001c.
Trying to downgrade to WM6.0 rom at the moment.

If anybody find a real solution please let me know

Similar problem here - scoured the web and found no fix!

HTC Trinity, Activesync 4.5, Win XP and Mobile 5.

Can sync all except emails. Set to 1 day, small size, no effect. Deleted todays emails, no effect.

Registry set up to save all email to storage card, no effect. Removed storage card and re-installed, soft reset, restart pc, repair Outlook (2003), re-established new sync to device after deleting existing, all no effect.

Interestingly, have noted there is also no option for my sub-folders in Email, it is greyed out.

The only changes made in Outlook refer to contacts - I added a further subfolder (and don't get me started on why I can't be allowed to sync Contact subfolders) and added in some birthdays on the main contacts list - about a dozen. I also removed at least a dozen contacts at the same time, before re-syncing and discovering this error - 8503001C

    Someone please help!!

Just upgraded from WM 6 to WM 6.1 and got this error.  No other software installed, just the stock (Sprint PPC6800) stuff.  I must have the problem in contacts and appointments because neither will sync.

I have over 800 contacts, and I'm not about to try the method mentioned above!

I've tried hard resetting, tried numerous solutions (every one I could find on the net).

My problem is now solved.  Here is what I did:

    1) Called Verizon tech support but could not get connected after three quick attempts.  I then did the following instead:

    2) Did a hard reset of the Verizon VX6800.  After resetting the phone, I called Verizon tech support to walk me through re-programming the phone, which turned out to be much easier than expected:  I just needed to press *228 then number 1 to automatically reprogram the phone.   I then drag and dropped all my contacts, tasks and calendar items (from backup) back into my Outlook, and all items synced perfectly.

    TrainSafe,

it appears your 800 contacts are very valuable.

I am not sure if the below information is helpful, but you may be able to do a quick backup of your 800 contacts by doing the following:

    1) Create a folder on your desktop called, for example, "TranSafe Contacts".

    2) Then go to your contact folder in your outlook, click on one contact, then click menu "Edit" then "Select All"

    3) Go to your folder on the desktop that you just created then do a paste.

    4) Burn your "TranSafe Contacts" folder to a CD or DVD

    5) Go to a different computer and try to restore the backed-up contacts.

If you can restore the all data properly, that means your data is now "safe".

You may now want to do some experiments such as the below:

    1) Delete your 800 contacts from your outlook

    2) Check to see if the phone synchronize properly

    3) If so, proceed to restore the contacts 200s at a time.  You may be able to find the "bad" contact that caused the entire problem and eliminate it or re-generate it.

Obviously, a Microsoft software problem.  I have a Blackjack II and it is getting the same error. I use Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 and Windows Mobile 6; Active Sync 4.5.0 (Build 5096) on Windows XP to sync.  It can happen on Contacts and Calendar appointments.  I have yet to find the similarities between the two or why it refuses to sync these items.  I have attempted to add the same contact several times.  All of the information is formatted just like other contacts, but it will hang up when syncing.  Deleting the contact allows the sync to complete.

Everything worked fine with my previous phone which ran Windows Mobile 5.  I have made no other desktop changes to Office.

Anyone on the other side have any ideas?  Any patches forthcoming?  Anyone with access to the source code able to reproduce this error or even trying to do so?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

A hard reset is not the solution as the problem is likely to surface again.

The piece you mention is in my opninion the easiest and safest way to go.

I installed the WMDC 6.0 version and it all went very smooth with no sync errors.

    HTC P4300 WM5, XP SP2 on an IBM G41, AS 4.5

Same story here; sync worked beautifully for a few weeks. Now it's an Attention Required with a support code of 8503001c.

The suggested solution is '...try deleting and then re-creating the device's sync relationships.'

Deleting everything and reinstalling does not help. I'm down to trying sync for contacts and calendar with no success.

Reading all the posts about sync problems hasn't helped. Is there any consistent solution to fixing this?

    Hi,

I have just posted today a solution that worked. You have to install WMDC 6.0 instead of 6.1

    You can find it here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=83D513EA-9DF9-4920-AF33-3A0E2E4E7BEB&displaylang=en

This has worked out consistently for many people as I can read.

I pulled my SD card and did a soft reset. USBed device sans SD to laptop. AS did its thing nicely and happily sync'ed. I disconnected and put the card back in, connected to laptop and got a successful sync. They're repeatedly syncing nicely now. I added Notes and Tasks to the list along with Contacts and Calendar--everything's working as they should. I do not have email selected for sync.

The link you give seems to point to v6.1, even though it says it's v6.0.  Or I missing something?  Frustrating!!!

    Hi,

The link is correct and you need to download version 6.0.

However, make sure you REMOVE 6.1 from your PC before you do that. Go to control panel, add/remove progams to do that.

Do a restart of your machine and make sure you have no version of WMDC installed at all, and then install the 6.0 version.

This is what I did and it worked fine.

    Hope this helps.

Make sure the filename is: drvupdate-x86.exe

    Version: 1.0

    Size: 10.4 MB

All this should be readable on the screen before you start the download on this link:

Our WM5 devices stopped synchronizing with Exchange 2003 SP2 EAS with error 0x8503001c on device".

There was a HTML-mail in inbox which created the problem. Outlook has got no problem to display this message.

MS-Support got the "special" email from us to reproduce the error in their test lab. MS synchonized the mail in every test scenario.

We did further tests and identified the problem:

The reason was a used encryption software "Safeguard PDA from UTIMACO". The product version 4.11 causes the problem with the "corrupted" HTML-mail. After setting up a device with latest UTIMACO version 4.25, the problem didn't occur anymore during synchroniztion. The fly in the ointment is, that we don't know the actual occation why the problem only occurs with this special HTML-mail, because other HTML-mails caused no problem.

ok i had the same issue at work.

i could sync the Palm 800 windows EMAIL over the air.

i could sync the Palm 800 windows Contacts and Calender over USB to the pc.

however when i tried to use Exchange on the active sync/USB it wouldnt work.

i could only sync it with "WINDOWS PC"

    so...

our exhange guy had me change the ACTIVE SYNC on the PC settings.

try modifying ActiveSync on the PC:
    1. On the PC, open ActiveSync
    2. Go to   File  |  Connection Settings
    3. Change the 'This computer is connected to:' setting to 'The Internet' from 'Automatic'
    4. Click OK

once i did this, i got an ACTIVE SYNC alert on the PDA when still attached to the USB.

    i disconnected the USB

i unchecked the CONTACTS on the PDA side under WINDOWS PC

then i checked the CONTACTS on the PDA side under the SERVERS source

    and BAM they synced up...

    hope this makes sense..

    Okay, it's working now.

I followed the advice of others here and tried running the sync without any of the Outlook items (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks) to be synced.  That worked.

I then backed-up the Tasks in Outlook, deleted them all from Outlook, then added them to be synced with the other items (so everything, but Contacts and Calendar).  And it worked. No errors.  It synced the Tasks from my cell phone (Motorola's New Q Global 9h) to Outlook (I'm using the trial version of Office 2007 Standard Edition)  on my PC.

I did the same with each, the Calendar and Contacts, in turn.  Backing up, deleting them from Outlook, then syncing.  No errors.

I have the HTC Mogul and had the MISFORTUNE to leave it connected to my laptop (which was running overnight to back up my Hard Drives ...) ... and the Windows Mobile 6.1 (under my Windows Vista Laptop) AUTOMATICALLY Loaded itself onto my HTC Mogul -- WIPED out my extensive Calendar, all my contacts (about 300), and the tasks too.

I tried copying the Contacts to a backup file -- and then deleting the original file (as some have stated) -- that DID NOT WORK at all -- I've manually LOADED in about 100 of the 300 already -- and STILL -- it is NOT syncing.

I have NO Calendar, I have NO Contacts (other than the ones I manually loaded in so far -- I am going to do the rest this evening), and the ONLY place everything is -- is on my Outlook 2007 on the laptop (and that is not complete -- it did LOSE some of the files too).

HELP!  I need that calendar up and running ... as well as the Contacts lists too.  IF I HAVE To manually re-enter ALL That data -- well .. it is going to take a few days of work -- which is a LOT of LOST TIME all because of this 'update'.  Did MS ever think about all the problems associated with its upgrades BEFORE it puts out these 'products?

UPDATE .. I unchecked the "Contacts" box (where the sync is hanging up and NOT proceeding) .. and you know what - when I did that -- the SYNC WIPED CLEAN all the data that I Just MANUALLY RE-ENTERED under "Contacts" -- thus, wasting SEVERAL HOURS of MY TIME once again.

WHAT Can be done here?  I am SO SICK and TIRED of this - I NEED my Contacts List and my Calendar -- and .. it looks like I am going to be UP ALL NIGHT just to be able to MANUALLY Re-Enter all my Data -- only to find that the blasted 'sync' will DELETE Them once again when I re-attach my Mogul Phone to the USB Port.  This IS INSANE!

OTHER than not ever 'sync-ing' the Mogul Phone again -- how in the world is this going to be solved????

PLEASE suggest something else I could do -- I've tried the ideas from the other posters to no avail.

    THANKS

3 weeks later -- I've finally re-loaded all my contacts (more than 300), and have started to re-load my Calendar too (All of this is being done MANUALLY -- the Sync STILL does NOT want to SYNC Successfully -- (Luckily I put all my contacts data on a Spreadsheet at the same time I put it in the PDA Phone Contact List -- so I DID have what amounts to a hardcopy) ... I wiped out (on Outlook) all the Contacts (completely) -- and finally it did sync contacts.  I am now Re-Loading CALENDAR -- date by date MANUALLY -- for the FUTURE entries (a real problem -- I have to contact ALL My Medical Providers for Appointment data which is now GONE).  I can NOT wipe out the PAST calendar data so easily -- for I need to keep the information as backup (detailed tracks of activities/events/etc).  It is hanging up on Calendar now (not syncing).

(And ... still ... the SAME ERROR CODE!!!!)

Thanks for the WDMC 6.0 trick! I tried for over a week to sync my O2 Xda Orbit (HTC Artemis). Installed WDMC 6.1 about 5 times, without success. Now I tried WDMC 6.0 and it worked perfectly!

I once again made the MISTAKE of having the Phone connected (to charge the Phone) while the LAPTOP was accessing the internet and running.  I am so UPSET -- once again ...

That SAME ERROR Code shows up - and ONCE AGAIN -- EVERY BIT of the SEVERAL HUNDRED of Contacts, my ENTIRE CALENDAR .. as well as every bit of my task list is GONE GONE GONE.

LET Me say this -- it WIPES out all the Contacts FIRST -- I just put one in (to check out to see how it would work) .. and it WIPED IT OUT COMPLETELY.

It then WIPES ALL of the CURRENTLY re-entered CALENDAR Appointments competely and TOTALLY from the Phone as well.

It STOPS all processing (Hangs-up) .. and leaves my PHONE with NOTHING -- No contacts, no calendar, no task list, NOTHING.

This update is USELESS ... I need to know how to DELETE This whole update and get BACK to what I had PRIOR to the mess being INVOLUNTARILY Uploaded onto my PDA Phone (HTC Mogul).

I've lost WEEKS having to re-load every time I want to charge the phone (and the laptop happens to be on and I NEED to use it for sure).  I travel frequently -- and with the update WIPING OUT ALL DATA -- each and every time .. all I have at hand is an EXPENSIVE phone that is made into a piece of JUNK!

HELP!  I am so aggravated -- and if not for the FACT that business needs REQUIRE (at this time) me to have the Microsoft Operating System -- I would have MIGRATED to a more stable Open Source Platform for SURE already.

NEVER Again .. Is there anywhere I can go to get HELP in going BACKWARDS in versions of Pocket Mobile?  I do NOT have any more time to WASTE ... I WANT my contacts to STAY on the PHONE!

With the way this Update was done -- I am going back to my MASSIVE Paper (bound copy) Planner -- at LEAST it doesn't DUMP all the data at once -- and I'll put up with the extra 10 lbs in my bag just because I NEED those Contacts and Calendar!

PLEASE ... HELP! FIX the problems with the Contacts/Calendar and give us users what we need to FUNCTION!

It is now Thanksgiving -- and once again .. this 6.1 WIPED OUT EVERY BIT of my Calendars, my Tasks, my Contacts (Several HUNDREDS!) and everything I need to keep track of all my daily appointments/activities, etc.

I STILL have no help at all.  I am tired of WASTING WEEKS of time re-loading EVERYTHING manually (because no matter what I do -- the fact remains .. that the Outlook is NOT syncing .. the data is GONE .. and this IS the situation.  NOT one thing will SYNC -- it just wipes every bit of data OUT of the PDA Phone completely.

The CODE is the same as BEFORE.  I am completely UNHAPPY with Microsoft and its updates -- and LACK of service -- especially since I (like all customers) have to pay so much for products that do NOT work!

Uninstall the WMDC 6.1 and install the 6.0 . It worked for me (and for others according to this thread). I have been using it for three months already without any errors.

Can you either write out the Complete Instructions on HOW to do this .. or post a LINK to help walk me through the process.  I've gone back to MY Paper Planner now for the past few months (which is hard to deal with).  I am just .. frustrated .. tired .. and I have not one bit of my DATA that I originally entered into the PHONE in it anymore.  I NEED that phone directory and Calendar desperately.  (And is there any way to completely remove Windows 6.1 update from my Laptop too -- because .. like one poster pointed out -- it will CONTINUE to keep re-installing this NEW version no matter what -- and it keeps WIPING out all my data each and every time!)

First unistall the WMDC 6.1 Go to Start>Control Panel, under Programs click Uninstall a program choose Windows Mobile Device Center and Uninstall it, do the same with Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update. Then install Windows Mobile Device Center version 6.0. This is the link http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=22&p=4&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId=&u=%2fdownloads%2fdetails.aspx%3fFamilyID%3d83d513ea-9df9-4920-af33-3a0e2e4e7beb%26DisplayLang%3den Install the new software. At this point some people in this thread advice to do a hard reset in the mobile device (I did not do it). Connect your mobile device. The software will recognize your device as a new one and will ask you to create a new partnership. Once you accept, the PC will transfer all the info back to the device. The first time I tried this solution the PC "upgraded" the WMDC automatically to the version 6.1 once I connected my phone. I repeated the whole process again and during the second atempt the PC "accepted" the WMDC 6.0 and did the sync. I hope this will work for you. Best of Luck.

I fixed my problem after a wasted 4 hours of my weekend.

    1. Make sure non of your contacts are in any other encoding but English (I had one contact in Russian font).
    2. Go to your mobile device Active sync (disconnected) and delete you computer (start - programs - activesync - menu - Options - delete)
    3. Change name on your mobile device (start - settings - system - about - Device ID - change to something different)
    4. On your PC remove connected mobile device from WMDC (WMDC - Mobile Device Settings - End Partnership - End Partnership)
    5. Now change one of the contacts in your outlook (some minor change in phone number will be sufficient)
    6. Now connect the mobile device back to the computer and select to sync everything except contacts, calendar, and email.
    7. Try to sync - should work, if it works then add one by one the other three syncs. If it fails on calendar or contacs just change one of the appointments or contacts and try again.

    Hope it helps

hi all,and since is my first post forgive my igcorance

i bought two weeks before an htc hd t8282 and it was just fine,
till yesterday with the 0x8503001C painfull code came up.
ive done everything you advise, But in my humble opinion the problem appears when someone ticks "tasks" in "change content sync settings", no matter what version of wmdc in use, newer or older when i pick task 0x8503001c appears and when i remove tick everything works fine.
Now,i dont know what really the cause is, but to find the heal was very very painfull {hard resets ,vista restore, backups and so on(not to mention the trouble in local HTC guys)

    greetings
    George

Thank you SO MUCH - after nearly pulling out all my hair in frustration (for days!) - I solved my sync. problems by doing as you wrote: removing all versions of Windows mobile on my pc, restart and download the 6.0 version/32 bits and then attach my phone (HTC).
All my contacts and calender are on the phone and working now - all my love to you!

    Hello
I use Vista 64 SP2. Can I fix this problem by installing WMDC6 instead of v6.1? If yes, where can I find v6.0 for Vista 64?
    Thanks

I have tried to install WMDC6 32 bits on Vista 64 bits and the install program says it 's not compatible with 64 bit processors.
Now the only thing left to try is a hard reset. Dam!!!! :(

Ok I just did a hard reset and it fixed it... so far! I'm just sad I didn't get what was the cause of the problem. Crossing my fingers for this problem not to appear again.

One thing I noticed: before the hard reset, I tested a lot of things, and each time I was removing the partnership and then re-enabling it. After the ended partnership, on the first USB connection of the phone, Vista was installing a driver called "HTC sync" (or something similar). What was stange is that the systray popup was also showing the Bluetooth logo in the help tip.
After the hard reset, on the first USB connection of the phone, Vista installed something called (from what I recall) "Driver for Remote Adapter".
I'll get back to this thread if the problems re-occur or if I find an explanation to this.

Thank you so much for your help. I lost hours today trying to get rid of the Error message and in the process lost my Calendar information on my phone. i did exactly as you said, as the last thing I wanted was to have to "hard reset". All seems to be working well now. Once again THANKYOU!
