AnswerOutlook/Gmail setting get easily currupt on Moto Q9c

    Hello,

I have a Moto Q 9c from Sprint with WM6.1 installed.  I keep running into a problem where my Gmail IMAP account keeps getting currupt and I have to delete the profile and re-add. It seems to happen about every 50 or so emails sent.  Around that time when I try and send an email it will give me an error telling me that the message can not be sent and to make sure that I have the settings correct and that I have network coverage.  Receiving new emails are fine, just sending.

Anyone else run into this problem or know of a solution?  I tried search here and I did not find anything.  Maybe I am just searching the wrong words.  This is getting very old as deleting the profile will delete the message I am trying to send and that gets irratting when its a long one that you have taken a few mintines to thumb type out.

    Thanks.

It seems that either the outgoing e-mail server configuration is incorrect ot that your account might be having some problems.

Try reviewing you account settings to the following:

    Outgoing mail: smtp.gmail.com

Dont forget to enable SSL for the outgoing e-mail under the advanced server settings.

    Regards

    Nuno

Yes, I always make sure that I use SSL.  Like I said, its weird because it will work fine for about 50 emails, then it starts happening.  I then delete the account, set it up with the account info as before, and it works fine for another 50 emails.

Ok, I think I found the problem and have fixed it.  The recommended settings that I got from the Sprint customer service rep had me forwarding my email through a specific port, smtp.gmail.com:587.  I removed the 587 and it seems to be workign fine now.  We will see if this was a temporary thing or if this was the fix I needed.

I have the same problem and have been unable to remedy it. How did you do so?  Can you give a step by step account?  I don't know how to change the smtp port, but this is really frustrating !!!

Well this solution is assuming that you actually are telling it to use a specific port.  Go to your GMail inbox in Outlook, click MENU, go to TOOLS, then OPTIONS.  From there, select ACCOUNT SETTINGS, then EDIT ACCOUNT SETUP.  From there keep clicking NEXT until you come to the OUTGOING (SMTP) MAIL SERVER page.  It should look like this SMTP.GMAIL.COM.  If you are telling Outlook to use a specific port it will look like this SMTP.GMAIL.COM:XXX where the XXX will be a number, this is the port you are teling it to use.  Just delete the number and the colon and then keep clicking NEXT to the end so it saves your new settings.

    Zantos,

I am interesting is seeing if this work for you.  I am not indicating a port number but am experiencing the same issue.  Can you provide an update?

Since I have made the change I have not been having the complete same problem.  While I still do sometimes run into issues where it will not send and give me the same error, usually I find now that if I either 1)Trim down the email (i.e. a long change of replies, delete out the old stuff and just keep the new reply), or 2)Power Cycle my phone.  Since I took out the port number, anytime I have this issue, one of these two solutions usually works for me.

So we can assume this is an issue with wm 6.1.  Is Microsoft working on this or is there any registry changes that can be made to fix this?

I'm not sure if it is a 6.1 issue but I would say that if it is, they are looking at it.  Just out of curiosity, what provider are you using?  I am wondering if that may be a reason...

I am on T-Mobile, Zanatos Sprint, and I have seen others reporting the same issue with AT&T.  Additionally prior to upgrading to 6.1 I ran the same setup with no issues.

Thanks for that!  # different carriers so I think we can safely assume it is not them .. lol

I would think if it was a Microsoft related issue we would be seeing more of this with a variety of devices.  Each vendor makes adjustments to the OS to fit the specs of their device .... is this just happening on the Moto Q9c?

I have been discussing the same problem on this thread.

    http://forums.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/showpost.aspx?postid=3829630&siteid=65

I guess we should consolidate the discussion here.

I had the same problem, using a POP3, rather than IMAP and also on T-Mobile in the UK (smtp.t-email.co.uk). My phone is a T-mobile MDA compact IV (HTC diamond) running 6.1 as well, and, thinking back, the problems arose after only 10 or 15 e mails, but the last 3 or so had attachments (image files) so were rather large (6MP immages). I wonder if there is file size issue................

Regarding the port issue, I had not set a port number (does this mean the port defaults to 25?)

I posted a similar querie on this forum recently, where there has been a lot of discussion about this issue, without any real resolution. Although some posters appear to have sorted the problem out, what ever their solutions, they don't work for everyone and I think the problem is more fundemental.

I have the same exact problem with a Sprint Mogol (HTC 6800).  I upgraded from PPC 6.0 to 6.1 this week and have deleted and added my pop mail from godaddy about 5 times.  It works for a day or so then sending generates the same error.  It's clearly a PPC 6.1 problem because it is cross platform.

We should report it as a bug to MS.

This is probably a stupid question but how do you report bugs?

No question is ever stupid pim2855

If you have a bug that you can document and give steps to follow to reproduce then carefully list them here in this thread if it relates to this thread.  I will forward a link to my contact at Microsoft.

Wife and I both have Q 9c's.  Both on Sprint.  My pop mail works fine, wife's doesn't. Same issue that every one else is reporting.  I think that this is a port issue but I can't verify it for sure.  I have a master ticket in with Sprint on this issue. If/when they figure it out, I will post it here.

Ireally did no need another emal account but I have finally setup a gmail account and have set it up on my Q9m.  So far with three days it has been working fine with no issues.  The setup was done via automatic detection of the mail settings.  Are you folks using the automatic detection or manually setting it up?

I have a gmail account on my Moto Q9c as well that appears to work.  My one pop account appears to work fine now if I use the sprint smtp server.  My wife's e-mail account works fine on my phone for sending, but still will not work on hers.... it initially worked on my phone, then it didn't, and then it did again.....go figure.

    Help_Line,

When you do the automatic setup, it has your settings as a POP3 account, not an IMAP account which is what I think most of us are using.  You have to do a little work around if you want to use IMAP.

Zantos, thanks for that.  I'm on the road and took a different device with me but when I return I will give it a try.  I d want to make sureI am on the same page.  Are these the settings you used?

    1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings.
    2. Open the Start menu and select Programs > Messaging > New E-mail Account.
    3. Enter your Gmail address (including '@gmail.com') in the E-mail Address field*. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com'*.
      * Windows Mobile 6.1 users: Enter an unintelligible email address (such as 'g@g') at this step. This will bypass the automatic configuration for POP access.
    4. Uncheck the box that asks to get settings automatically from the Internet and select Next.
    5. Select Internet e-mail as your email provider in the drop-down menu.
    6. Enter your name as you want it to appear in sent emails.
    7. Enter a descriptive name for the email account and select Next.
    8. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' in the Incoming Mail Server field.
    9. Select IMAP4 as the Account type from the drop-down menu and select Next.
    10. Enter your full email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') and password.
    11. Select Next.
    12. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server field.
    13. Make sure that the Outgoing server requires authentication box is checked.
    14. Select the Advanced Server Settings link.
    15. Make sure that the Require SSL box is checked for both incoming and outgoing emails.
    16. Select The Internet as the network connection from the drop-down menu.
    17. Select Done and then Next.
    18. Select how often you want your phone to send/receive emails from the drop-down menu.
    19. For more download options, select the Review all download settings link.
    20. Select Finish.

I myself have been having this problem with Windows Mobile 6.1 on my AT&T Moto Q Global.  I did not have this problem on WM 6.0.

I don't recall seeing a listing of this in any of the earlier threads but Matt and Tracy's Blog talks about this issue with Windows Mobile 6.1 and SMTP.  They state that they've been working with internals to Microsoft and it is a bug with Windows Mobile 6.1 for sending e-mails (does not affect Exchange accounts).  To read more on it, the link is listed below.

    Help_Line,

It depends on which version of WM you are running.  If you are running 5.0, then yes, those steps should get you IMAP settings.  If you are running 6.0 or 6.1, then you have to use a work around.  When you go to setup an account and it asks you for the email address, you have to put in one with a bogus domain name, something like johnQtest@fakedomain.com When windows goes and tries to locate automatic settings for this domain, it will not be able to find it and then allows you to configure it yourself.  If you do a .gmail.com domain, it will automatically set you up as a POP3 account and there is no way to change it.  Then once you go through the settings process you can setup your incoming and out going addresses as they should be, in this case imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, including your user name and password.  Make sure to select your secure SSL settings, even in the advance menu.  Once you have it setup, select no for it to check for mail now.  Once back at the options menu, select your option to edit account settings, go back into your account, and change your email address to what it should correctly be and voila!  You know have IMAP settings for Gmail on your WM 6 phone.

Thanks Zanatos!  I just got back and set it up.  I will try it out for a few days and will get back if I start to get an issue.  You had indicated initially that it started having issues around 50 emails or so I'll get to that number and see what happens.

I just saw this item on the official gmail blog.  Jamie Nicolson, a Gmail engineer, made a post on the NEW Advanced IMAP Controls on Oct 9, 2008.  I thought it would be a good item to pass on just in case it makes a difference for one of you folks.

Microsoft provides a Hotfix for the issue that if one SMTP server is not available it gives the opportunity to give another SMTP server address to try.
    Maybe this will help.

    Hotfix KB958639

I too have had the same problem as those above. Have Moto Q9C running Windows Mobile 6 with Sprint, using email to access a cox.net email account and sometimes the outgoing mail won't go even if I power off the phone. Have had to create new accounts way too often. The thing I have noticed, when going through the Settings, is that the smtp screen shows my password like twice as long as what I entered. I fix that, and sometimes that will let the outgoing mail through; sometimes not. I'm going to try to load the upgrade and see if that fixes things.

i fixed my issue by upgrading......the phone.... to a Palm Treo Pro.  Still using Windows Mobile 6.1 with Sprint service and it works flawlessly.  I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the issues I had were with the Q9C and the way it was set up and not the OS.  I was told by someone at the Sprint store that they had had a ton of issues with the Q9c which is why they no longer sell it.... at least in the stores.
