Asked by:
Use "alias" with AD Domain Controller

General discussion

Hello friends,
I'm migrating an AD to 2019 and due to the large number of services dependent on the AD, I had an idea and a doubt at the same time.
As with other services and applications, we use "alias" in DNS for ease of use. for example:
Instead of providing applications with a server name (srv01prdxyz.contoso.com) we provide the alias » xyz.contoso.com (or something else).
In order to facilitate my future organization for possible updates and everything, I want to use alias to point to my AD, instead of using the server name srv001dcprdblbl.contoso.com, use something like » mydc.contoso.com (example ). Here comes the questions:
Is this allowed?
Is it good practice?
Can I do this without problems or do I run the risk of a problem?
Thanks for the comments already in advance.

Login to Domain controller:
In Server Manager click on Tools and then on Active Directory Users and Computers:
Right Click on the User whom Alias needs to be added:
Now click on Attribute Editor and navigate to Proxy Addresses and then click on Edit.Regards,

Hi There Awérik,
In my humble opinion it shouldn't be a problem as long as you've backed up all the zones from the old server including zone files and any other configuration settings. then you are good. And once you've got the new DNS server working properly you can just decommission the old server and remove it from the network.
So i don't see a problem to be honest
