Excel workbook offloading authentication not working

  • Hi,

    I have created a new HPC cluster using HPC Pack 2016, which will eventually replace our existing 2012 R2 Update 3 cluster.

    I am having a problem with Excel workbook offloading jobs on the new cluster. When a user submits a job to the HPC cluster, it will prompt the user for their credentials if it is the first time using the cluster (as expected), however their credentials will not work and they get an error stating: "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer".

    This error message also appears in event viewer on the head node:

    [SessionLauncher] .AllocateInternal: callId=45fc2f99-93d7-4db9-a94e-ff694d7a6560, Invalide credential to submit the job, Exception:System.Security.Authentication.InvalidCredentialException: System error. ---> Microsoft.Hpc.Scheduler.Properties.SchedulerException: Authentication failure: Please check your credentials and try again.
       --- End of inner exception stack trace ---
       at Microsoft.Hpc.Scheduler.Store.JobEx.BeginSubmit(StoreProperty[] props, AsyncCallback callback, Object param)
       at Microsoft.Hpc.Scheduler.Store.JobEx.Submit(StoreProperty[] submitProps)
       at Microsoft.Hpc.Scheduler.Session.Internal.Common.ThreadSafeScheduler.SubmitJob(ISchedulerJob job, String username, String password)
       at Microsoft.Hpc.Scheduler.Session.Internal.SessionLauncher.SessionLauncher.<AllocateInternal>d__43.MoveNext()

    As far as I can see, users are configured correctly and they can run simple single-task commands with no issues (e.g. hostname). We have found that once a user submits a job to the cluster using the cluster manager or powershell, their credentials will be cached and they are then able to run jobs from Excel until they change their password.

    It seems that the credentials are not being passed from Excel to the Head Node correctly. Is there any know issues with HPC Pack 2016 that could be causing this? Or could this be a configuration issue with Excel or with our firewall?

    HPC version: 5.0.5826.0

    Excel version: 2016 64-bit 16.0.8431.2110

  • Hi retep292,

    This looks an invalid credential. How did the user specify the credential? Is the username in <Domain>\<Username> format? Besides the single-task job, can the user run SOA echo client by %ccp_home%Bin\EchoClient.exe? You may delete the cached credential by running 'cluscfg delcreds /user:<Domain>\<Username>' before running EchoClient.exe. Can another user or an admin authenticate for the Excel workbook offloading?

    Meanwhile, it is also recommended to use HPC Pack 2016 Update 1 instead of HPC Pack 2016 for a new cluster.
