laptop stolen - they are connected... ip address??

Question
-
I've gotten the run around from microsoft. One of my laptops that was stolen Friday is currently connected to my live mesh account. Does microsoft save the information of when people are connected (IP addresses?) The deputy will call and get a warrant if they can actually get an ip address for them to investigate, but he said for me to find out from microsoft that they will be able to help first - which I haven't found out! They are still connected right now!Monday, November 2, 2009 5:46 PM

Sorry to read about the stolen laptop.

Since the laptop is visibly connected, have you considered trying to remote to the machine? I'm not sure if I would do that, but.... Once there, you can check the IP address of the machine in a command prompt and then log right off again.
As noted in my other post, I don't know what logging is maintained by Microsoft for Live Mesh clients in the service. It may all be transparent to the servers witout logging simply for security purposes.

I would be interested in this. It would be a definite bonus to use LM if you are able to recover the laptop.Monday, November 2, 2009 7:19 PM

Well they added a new user with a login - password protected. I'm guessing there isn't a way around that. Their hint for their password is "the mob" - fitting for thiefs.
They are still logged in. ugh.Tuesday, November 3, 2009 5:26 AM -

That really sucks. :-(
I wish that I could offer more help. It would be lovely if the Live Mesh client and Live Desktop would provide a way to show the IP address of the connected devices, but that isn't the case. I poked around in the various files on my machine to see if there was anything that was being written to indentify the PCs in my Mesh, but all I could find were GUID's - no details that would help you.

that would be neat. My company (~1200 employees, over 90% remote) got tired of folks leaving and 'forgetting' to send back their machines -- you'd be surprised at how many people apparently don't see this as stealing. So we now install some software on them that interacts with the TPM module on the motherboard. After someone leaves, if they ever connect to the Internet, we can disable the machine entirely, going so far as preventing them even from formatting the drive & installing another OS. We quite literally can turn it into a brick.Wednesday, November 4, 2009 1:28 AM
