I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop and I'm trying to hook up a canon pixma mp190. I have windows vista home premium and I currently have no printers installed on my computer. The scanner works just fine, I just can't seem to get the printer hooked up. I'm not computer savvy at all so I really need some help...thanks!Sunday, October 4, 2009 3:18 AM

Are we trying to directly connect the printer to the laptop or are we trying to connect to it through the network? Are you trying to share or access it using OneCare's Printer Sharing?
Whatever you may be doing in accessing the printer would need the drivers of the PIXMA MP190 to be installed into the Operating System to make it function correctly. So far as I see it the printer is supported on Vista so long as you use the driver software provided by the Manufacturer. If you don't have the driver you may find it HERE. Choose your Operating System first before you download under "Drivers / Software Selection".

I'm trying to connect it directly to the laptop...When I try and download the driver a Program Compaitbility Assistant box pops up saying This program might not have installed correctly so I do the recommend installation from windows and when it tries to install it...it pops up a box that says Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. The style of the INF is different than what was requested.Sunday, October 4, 2009 3:43 AM

You may need to run the setup as Administrator. To do this, right click on the Setup and then choose to "Run as Administrator". Disconnect the Printer first before running the setup. After the setup runs follow the instructions when it needs to detect the printer.

I'll just add that you're actually off topic for this forum as you are not trying to use the Printer Sharing functionality of OneCare. I recommend that you contact Canon support for help with installing the driver to your PC for this printer. You may be trying to install a 32 bit driver and your Windows Vista may be a 64 bit version, but that's just a guess.
