Your WGA problem is caused by the Tampered file above – it may not be the only problem, if WU is malfunctioning.
I would suggest running CHKDSK and SFC (assuming that you’ve already tried a System Restore?)

    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

  • First Noel, thank you for trying to help me resolve this problem. Second, I followed all of your instructions and these are the results of everything:

CHKDSK: After reboot, the only result that came from running it was "Volume is clean."

SFC/SCANNOW result was that "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." The details are in the CBS log from the Windows\Logs folder but not sure if you want me to post the 693 kb here. Please advise and thank you again.

    ...and the new MGADiag report?
it sounds from your SFC result that you may have considerable corruption present – since you have what appears to be an install from a Retail disk, I would try a repair install of the OS, and go from there.
If you need further assistance on that, the place to go is the Windows Answers forums - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install

If you’re desperate to avoid a repair install, and you still have problems with WU, then I suggest posting in the SevenForums Windows Updates forum, where a specialist is able to craft customised repairs based on the output from SFC and CheckSUR logs - http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/ (note – he does have a real-life job, so this process can take some time!)

  • Hmmm - I just noticed the date (and other things) of the BIOS on this machine....

    SYSTEM><Manufacturer>Hewlett-Packard</Manufacturer><Model>PPPPPPP-CCC#MMMMMMMM</Model></SYSTEM><BIOS><Manufacturer>Phoenix Technologies, LTD</Manufacturer><Version>5.11</Version><SMBIOSVersion major="2" minor="5"/><Date>20090213000000.000000+000</Date></BIOS

This looks suspiciously as if the machine is in fact based on a Retail motherboard, but with the DMI info hacked to look somewhat like an HP board.

The date is, anyhow too early to support a Win 7 SLP BIOS.

    The install is non-genuine.

  • Oh B&gger!

     - I never checked it, and confused it with the HP one - 3Q6C9.

    Mea Culpa.

Doesn't alter the fact that someone's been trying to make the motherboard look like an HP, possibly of a different kind to the one it actually is. The only thing I can think of that may give rise to that sort of entry in a legitimate machine would be if it's a replacement board.

Blame the lack of caffeine again (and I have a Kilo of beans in the fridge, too!)
