Vista Build 6002 Not Genuine after an automatic Update RRS feed

  • Question

  • On 18 September, I allowed my PC to do a set of automatic updates while shutting down.  The next day when I started up, I had the following error message: An unauthorized change was made to Windows. Windows must be reinstalled to activate.   In addition I now have the message Windows Vista Build 6002 This copy of Windows is not genuine on the desktop.

Validation on the MS website failed.

I then tried restoring to a point before the update, but all restore points had been deleted, including the one that the system should have made prior to the update.  The only one remaining was a routine restore point made after the update.

I then manually uninstalled the 5 windows updates that had come down the previous evening prior to the error.  No change.  still the same error messages.  When I shut down, the uninstalled windows updates reinstalled themselves.  On re-start, the previous restore point had been deleted.

The following is the diagnostic report:

  • Hi Carey,

Do i need to perform the above offline or online? I tried the process and it all seems to go well. I rebooted once but didnt log into the pc i rebooted imediatel seeing the login screen. Second time logged in and is now asked for the key to be re-entered. The problem i now have is for some off reason it doesnt accept the key that is on the sticker at the bottom of the laptop. Its a ACER laptop that came preinstalled with Vista business and the key on the sticker also confirms this.

How can i now get past this point? without reinstalling everything. The only software on the laptop apart from the acer junk is AVG network edition and office 2007 pro. i have a second laptop exactly the same as this one bought the same day with more software on and it works 100%.

    Please help Carey.

  • Hello GerritV,

In order to receive the best support, we request all users initially download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a New thread.

If you do not have access to the Start Button:
    1) Login to Vista and click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.
    2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.
    3) A window will come up asking if you want to “Run” or “Save”, Select “Run”
    4) When the program runs, click the “Continue” button, then click the “Copy” button.
    5) Create New Thread and post paste the report in to the post.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS
