Oh and Microsoft told me to put the installation disk in and just re-enter my product code.  The PC was a gift from my sister in law and I do not have the original disk.  The sticker on the pc has the product code and a month ago I re-installed windows vista by downloading it off microsoft website with the same product key.  They suggested I contact gateway for a new disk, but my warrenty expired years ago.

  • It's fixed!  What I did was:

Install service pack 1 and then 2 for vista

Run the windows activation . Go to start>system then select System and Maintenance>system.  Go to bottom of the screen, windows activation, and let it run the activation.

    Thanks to all who helped!

  • This machine is in desperate need of updating - it's still on the original release version of Vista!

You need to change the Product Key to the one on your COA sticker, which will then activate properly - there is a link at the bottom of the System properties page, to change the Key.

I really do recommend that as soon as you have it activated, you should install a decent Anti-Virus (MSE will do) and then go through the update procedures until there are no more to install.

  • Download and install the standalone version of Windows Vista Service Pack 2. Then visit Windows Update and download all the subsequent critical updates.

---> Please note that Microsoft does not support Windows Vista unless it has Service Pack 2 installed.

  • Note also that Vista Service Pack 1 must be installed prior to SP2!

  • Boot to Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly while the computer is still displaying the black/white POST messages).

That will enable you to access Safe Mode with Networking, and you can get a fair amount done that way.

  • Thanks. I've been trying to do this but it takes longer than an hour and after an hour the computer goes back to the login screen. When I go back into the internet again i have to start over.  Is there another way to download the service pack?

  • You can download the Service Packs on any computer and copy them to usb stick or CD/DVD - then use that to install them.

Have you changed the Key to the one from your COA sticker and activated it yet?

Please post a new MGADiag report
