XP SP3 Install Problems - User account issue?

Question
-
Hi
Have successfully installed Mesh on a number of machines - XP, Vista and Mac and have been using mesh for some time with no problems.
However, Have tried to install today on a machine running XP media center edition, with Service Pack 3 and have had less success. When logged in as a user with administrator privileges - the only account on the machine - mesh tries to install and then I get the following error:
[8007052E] Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password
If I try to install using 'run as' and select administrator then the installation goes fine, but mesh is not available to the normal user account. If I log in to the 'hidden' administrator account, then mesh starts up and runs perfectly.
Perhaps I am missing something simple here - I hope so....
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer
Alex

I think that it would be a great idea for you to gather the logs and submit a bug on Connect per the instructions in the announcement post at the top of the forum. It does sound like there's some sort of permissions problem that is local to the profile you are logged in with. I assume that you can also create a new User on the box and Live Mesh would probably work fine under that User, too.

Not sure how much use the log files would be, in this case. The program runs fine under 'administrator', so I guess they wouldn't show any problems. There arn't any logs for the regular user since I can't get the service to install under that user.
If I am wrong, or if there is somewhere else to look for the logs, please do let me know.
Havn't tried your suggestion of creating another user, but will try it, although it won't actually help me get it working for the normal user account.

Update: If I create another user, as an administrator, the service installs fine for that user. Have looked through users/groups and policies and Cannot see anything different between the two users, although I am not too familiar with everything I find there...
Any more ideas?

You haven't detailed exactly what happens when you try to install the service under a non-admin account... what messages do you get, if anything?Sunday, January 25, 2009 3:04 PM

It starts to install, then uninstalls itself, then gives the error message a described in my first post:
[8007052E] Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password
I don't get any of the firewall warnings that I get with other users or on other machines so presumably it is not getting far enough to start to try to communicate with the server. or perhaps this is where things are falling over.
Disabling the firewall doesn't make any difference.

apologies - I assumed that that message was *after* installing...
Couple of questions:
1) is the machine on a domain?
2) are user profiles stored on a network drive? On the angle - is anything on the local drive mapped to a network drive?
3) are all users local (if not on a domain?)Cheers,
Oren

As far as I know, the install logs will still be created up until the point of failure, so gathering the logs while logged in as the user ID with the problem may reveal the information needed to determine the problem's cause.-steve

missed that part of the question. The log that you want is the Live Mesh Servicing log, which is basically the install log. From the announce, here is how to get it:
Windows PCs only: If you run into an error during the installation of the Live Mesh software, a Servicing.log will be created. To get this log:
1. Click Start
2. If you are using Vista, type Servicing* in the search bar. If you are using XP, click Search and then type Servicing*
3. In the search results you will see Servicing.log or Servicing(0000).log depending on where the installation failed. To go directly to the file, the Servicing log is in INSTALLDIR\Setup\Servicing.log or %temp%\Live Mesh\Servicing[0000].log if Live Mesh was uninstalled/rolled back during a failed installation.

Hi All - thanks for your replies. I have located the log file and will send it as suggested.
In answer to Oren's questions:
a) No The machine is not on a domain. It is on a simple home network consisting of roughly 4 machines (it varies). Just file and print sharing, and internet, via the network.
b/c) All user profiles are local and stored on the 'c' drive. There are 2 internal drives and also an external USB drive. 2 of these do have parts shared over the network and are mapped as network drives on other machines - if that is what you mean. This machine has no locally mapped network drives, although it does technically have access to shared drives on other machines.
It does have remote desktop enabled, and also runs a VNC server, in case that is of any relevance.
Thanks again for any assistance

Excellent. I don't know that the VNC server is relevant, since you are able to install Live Mesh on the machine under a different account, not just your primary user, but the logs should help the team pinpoint the cause. Thanks for gathering them and submitting.
