How to pass exam 70-536 with a high grade RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

I'm looking to take exam 70-536 soon and I also want a high grade instead of just passing it.

I've just ordered MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-536). Is it enough, does it cover everything, or I should look elsewhere too ?

Should I get CLR via C# by
Jeffrey Richter instead ? Or maybe I should get both ?

    Thanks

  • I think you should read just Richter and Herbert Schildt because when you read both you only need a good practice test.

These are Microsoft's own errata on the book it was so long it was published in two parts.

  • Maybe you should get both and if you have money add Herbert Schildt because both Richter and Herbert Schildt knows these langauges better than the English language.

  • Thanks for your reply Caddre.

    C# 2.0: The Complete Reference
    you mean right ?

I've canceled the MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit already after reading some reviews and now I'm thinking about buying only CLR via C# for the moment and read it while I wait for the 2nd edition of MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-536).

  • Yes because I would have dropped C# back in 2001 if I had not bought his book for C# 1.1, even today I see so called experts saying carriage return is not covered in the Framework but if they had read his book they would have known it was covered. The exam deals with Reflection he tells you reflection alone can fill one book.

  • Thanks again for your input Caddre.

I plan to read CLR via C# by Jeffrey Richter first, then read MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit 2nd Edition and lastly if needed C# 2.0: The Complete Reference by Herbert Schildt.

Is this a good path to get well prepared for this exam ?

    Thanks for your help.

  • I have red 70-536 Self paced training kit, CLR via C# and now Im reading "Customizing CLR"because all thease AppdDomain stuff is not clear enough to me yet.
    Friday, July 25, 2008 6:19 AM
  • What is relevant in AppDomain actually relate to the System.reflection.Assembly it comes without a default public constructor so you must call load, check below to know the important difference in the version of Load defined.  You also need to know about MethodBase and MethodInfo and I was happy with how Herbert Schildt covered Reflection because he says you can write a book just on System.Reflection.

  • Hi guys,
I was wondering if any of you know what format is the test? is it purely multiple choice? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
    Saturday, July 26, 2008 8:22 AM
  • I think the exam is 40 to 45 questions with one answer is the most, two answers and a few three answers which includes drag and drop.  The drag and drop deals with knowing classes or methods for development tasks.

  • When you said one, two, and three answers, you mean multiple choices with one, two, and three answers right? So there isn't any fill in the blank or questions that you actually have to do some coding?
    Saturday, July 26, 2008 5:56 PM
  • Yes they are multiple choices that are code samples you have to pick the correct code sample including the drag and drop.  There is no fill in the blanks code because there are many ways to write code that will compile but are sometimes just crappy crude code.

So you must know code and the classes, methods, properties, fields and structs needed to create the correct code for each question.

  • Hi All,

Which one should I pick out of the following three for preparing for TS 70-536 Exam and also if you could help me out with the correct / latest version of the book so that I don't end up ordering the wrong version.

    1. C# Herbert Schildt
    2. clr via C# Jeffrey Richter
    3. MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-536)

Again, please let me know what the correct version (or if you have the ISBN handy) of these books is. I have 4 years of working experience in ASP.Net using C# starting from 1.1 to 3.5 now.

  • Hi,

I am sorry it too so long to reply you while I was trying to reply yesterday, my computer crashed I had to use recovery disk to recover.  So here is my answer buy number one and two don't buy number three because if you read the four erratas published by Microsoft those writers don't know basics and there is nothing basic about exam 70-536.  You also need practice test like Transcenders and you can very easily remember sections of both books covering sections of this exam.  You may also need the Skills tested section of this exam.  Post again if you still need help.

    • CLR via C# by Jeffrey Richter
      • C# 2.0: The Complete Reference by Herbert Schildt

After reading this thread I m thinking might be im doing wrong or pick the wrong book for this exam.

        thx

  • If you are not advanced C# developer you may not be able to take this exam in one month, so I think you could change to both books because I think both books are about the same size of that one book but written by actuall C based languages expert who will explain what is not covered in the MSDN docs.  Please read the previous post also about practice test.

  • Hey  Caddre I got a question. This is my 2nd Microsoft exam my first being 70-431. Now my question is do we get similations in 70-536 too like in 431?bcz we have .Net framework 2.0 Configuration tool and I'm assuming there may be some simulations like adding assemblies, editing policies, code groups and stuff. So Can i expect simulations here? My other question is what is the difference between the 1st edition & 2e of self paced book? Really appreciate your help.

    Thank you

  • No here is no simulation in this exam but it is a very comprehensive exam so use the two books and use the updated MSDN links for the skills measured page in the thread below, it is the base class exam I will answer most questions related to the skills measured in this exam.

I am planning to give the MCTS 70 - 536 exam in the mid of April. But I'm confused abt the selection of the books that which book I have to study to clear the exam with good score. Also suggest some good links if required to clear the examination.

I am new to the working environment of C#. I can devote 40 -50 hr/week for the examination.

    Pls advice me.

In C# read Jeffery Richter and Herbert Schildt and check the thread below for the MSDN docs links for skills measured page of the exam.  I will not recommend the Microsoft exam prep book because it comes with almost 100 pages errata for such a comprehensive exam.  I have read the some of the errata which tells me the writers are not qualified to write a C# exam book.  I can answer most questions related to the skills measured page, post again if you still need help.

The language for the test is based on your answers before the test starts, being a former Java developer I can only test in C# so I got C# questions.

  • Hi Caddre,

Seen as though you are the main driving force for this thread can you suggest some further reading for Interoperability for the sake of this exam as well potentially and globalization and localization??? These seems to be my weakest subjects .... as I have sat the exam twice now and I have failed on exactly the same score ..... falling 2 qs short every time :(

    Update:

At Present I have managed to get hold of the C# Via CLR Second Edition - will this do or shall I read the 2010 Third Edition?

You need to read the second edition because the third edition is for the new .NET 4.0 exams, I will post later with some references you can use to study before your next try.

    Thanks man much appreciate it.

I hold a good grounding of knowledge now that i think i should be able to pass the exam but I have been edged out twice now purely because of new stuff on the exams that I have not seen before. On both sittings I scored 65% which is a bitter pill to swallow. The weakest areas for me seem to interoperability ... reflection and Authorization and Authentication related classes like WindowsPrincipal and WindowsIdentity .... whenever these types of questions have come the right answer always used a funky class called NTAccount which completely throws me off.

Anyways I got an ebook of the 2nd edition and the C# Via CLR also. So i got lots of reading to do my only problem is when is enough ... as I have read the VC# Step by Step by J.Sharp 2008 and read the official 70-536 Book by tony Northrup three times now as well spent alot of time on MSDN looking up all the classes that i can think.

I look forward to reading your reply.

  • This new post says you are not ready because authorization is used with authentication to give access to Windows resources what is relevant depends on the connection context.  I have posted a reflection related link earlier in the thread; the Assembly class comes without a default constructor by design so you need to know Assembly. Load including known issues covered by Suzanne Cook.  Reflection comes with two very large abstract classes that cover most of the base class, these are System. Type and System.MemberInfo you must know these two classes’ child classes and their uses because reflection alone can cover one book.

I have not looked up InterOp but you need to know P/Invoke (platform invoke) and what is needed to use it, the link below comes with all the material you need about globalization and localization, the globalization blogs are at the end of the page the topics you need are in links on the side.

  • Hi Caddre,

I recently decided to go for the MCPD certification and I am planning on taking the 70-536 exam. I want to follow your advice and read the two books you suggested by Schildt and Richter. I am going for the ASP.NET 3.5 Developer. Now i am not sure which versions of the books i should get. The most recent versions are for C# 4.0 and .NET 4.0 framework. The previous versions are for 2.0 .NET so i am not sure which ones i should use.

Should i get the 2nd or 3rd edition of CLR via c#?

Should i get the C# 2.0, C# 3.0 or C#4.0 version of the Complete Reference book?

Which of the two should i read first? I am relatively new to C# and .NET, have been mostly a Java guy.

**Also a general question. Here is my goal in life... I want to develop web apps/solutions for use by SMBs that is why i decided to go for the Developer path, however I have a feeling that with success in the web app development environment, there could come an opportunity in customizing those apps to make individual enterprise apps for individual firms. Do you think that possibility is reason enough to pursue the Enterprise Application Developer path instead of the Web Developer path? I could really use some mentorship on this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you

I just started studying for MCPD 4.0 exams which does not require that exam but requires both WCF and ADO.NET exams; if you choose to take the MCPD 3.5 exams then you need only CLR 2.0 and Complete reference 2.0 to prep for the exam 70-536.   I still think the exam is needed for new .NET developers like you to understand many low level .NET developments.

From Java I think you should start with Complete Reference because he wrote books on Java, C++ and C#.  If you choose to take the .NET 4.0 exams you can buy the 4.0 versions of both books to get better understanding of .NET development but not to prep for the current exams.

I think you should read both books either the 2.0 or 4.0 versions if you want to be able to choose any Asp.net job because if you know .NET you just add the platforms as Asp.net or Client application as needed.  Post again if you still need help.
