Question
-
Details about the COA:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
XP Pro SP2
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
OEM Software
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
No
Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.
I have installed the software from scratch using key from COA. Updated to SP3. Installed more security updates and Internet security. No viruses found. Installed Flash Player. Restarted now get the following message with black screen:
"You may be a victim of software counterfeitingCalled MS and confirm software is genuine. For £65 they can fix my issue with extended support valid for 30 Days. Windows 8 is £29.95 and free support for 90Days.
Can it be fixed without Windows 8?

If you're lucky, you may be able to use the Product Key Update tool to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker. Your current Key is a blocked Volume License Key.
Use the Product Key Update Tool - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/help/genuine/product-key to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker, then reboot and post a new MGADiag report so we can confirm that everything went OK

Not lucky, get "product key entered is not a valid key for this system, check and try again"
Can this be fixed?

Good question! :(
You can try telephone activation, but I suspect that you will be met with a frosty response.
The only other thing that will work is going to be a clean install with the appropriate media.

Thanks for replying,
Spoke with them on the telephone. Professional is not for home use and the £65 fix wont work now.
Already tried the clean install. Accepts product key right at the start and somehow gets changed.
Time for an Apple.

I have rarely heard a more ridiculous statement than "Professional is not for home use" - it's patently untrue, and irrelevant to the problem anyhow.
It may be that you're using the wrong type of disk - where did you get it from?
Do you know anyone with a Windows XP Pro OEM System Builder disk you can borrow??

Thats what they claim.
Purchased disk from a large computer mail order company for home use. Has Part Number X10-59871 on CD and X14-01711 on Certificate of Authenticity. Came with a blue cover booklet with red stripe "for distribution only with new PC" I can remember the adverts having green and white stripes along the edges of the pages. They stopped trading long time ago.

It may be that the Key won't work in an SP3 install - there are known problems that way.
You may have to reformat and activate before updating to SP3. (Did the operator confirm that your Key was a valid one? If so, that should work.)

I've been dealing with this problem two weeks. Just solved it tonight:
Download and run WinKeyFinder
Select "Change Key"
Enter your correct product key
Enjoy
