  • Hello MiMi0121,

Unfortunatly, you did not provide a description of your issue.  The title of the thread indicates you are having a problem with Windows Defender. This forum does not support Windows Defender, we support Windows Genuine Advantage.

I see that you posted a Diagnostic Report and even though the Report is showing Genuine, I do see some problems that will, most likely, cause problems in the near future.

You will notice that a large number of files are showing as "Mismatch', in your Diagnostic Report. Because of this Mismatch file information, your Vista may go into Reduced Functionality Mode at any time. This is because Vista will, most likely, perceive these tampered files as an attack on it, in an attempt to bypass antipiracy security.

In reallity these Mismatched files are (most likely) not bad. Vista uses a encrypted list (called the System Catalog) of all it's system file's Signatur Hashs. If the signature hash, of a system file, doesn't match what is on this list, Vista knows the file have been modfied in some way. But in your case, I believe this List, itself, has become corrupted in some way. So since the list is bad, Vista is unable to match any file's Hash with what is in the list and reports all the systems files as mismatched.

You could try a system scan. It will look for bad system files and attempt to repair them.

    To run the scan:

    1) login to Vista in normal mode
    2) Click start and in the 'Start Search" field, type: cmd
    3) the top result, of the search, should be a program called CMD
    4) Right-Click the file and select 'Run as administrator'
    5) In the CMD windows, type: sfc /scannow
    6) Once done, it should tell you what it has done.
    7) Run the Diagnostic Report again and see if the Mismatch files are gone.

The next option is to System Restore:

    Repair Windows using System Restore:

    1) Reboot Vista into Safe Mode
    2) Go to Control Panel
    3) On the left hand side of the Control Panel window, Click on "Classic View"
    4) Double-click "Backup and Restore Center"
    5) On the left hand side of the window, click "Repair Windows using system restore"
    6) Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.
    7) Click the "Next" button.
    8) Reboot back into Normal mode

If these steps do not work, my only other suggestions would be to either contact Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com or to reinstall Vista.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS
