Home Server Home Page Design Question RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am attempting to change my Home Server Home Page to display live video  from my IP webcam. No problem with the redesign but I need to know how to format the path to the IP Camera which is on the network. It has its own IP and I normally connect to it with http://192.168.1.20/tvjview.htm from within the network and that works perfectly on the Home Page when I access the page from within the network. When I access the Home Page from the Web I get the Home Page but the link to the IP camera will not work.
So my question is this - how do I access a source on my network but not on the Home Server for use on the Home Server Home Page that will work from the Web?

  • WHS won't work that way. Your browser doesn't know where 192.168.1.20 is in your network, since it is outside the network.
If you are behind a router, you can use port forwarding to direct port 80 requests to the 192.168.1.20 IP.

  • Hi,
you cannot use the IP address to access your camera from outside, since it is one of those private IP adresses, which are not routed into the Internet.
Instead use your WHS domain to access your router:
    http://yourhomeservername.homeserver.com:8080/tvjview.htm

Not sure, if it works and if you would get happy with the results, since the bandwidth for outgoing traffic from your home is usually much lower than for incoming traffic.

  • I do this by setting up my IP webcam to forward to an unused port - :8080
I have then set up a  port forwarding rule on my webcam to allow 8080
I then access the webcam using:
    http://mydomain.homeserver.com:8080/

  • Thanks -

I have the router pointing port 8080 to the IP camera at 192.168.1.20 - so- what is the best way to format the link?

For example: http //192.168.1.20:8080/tvjview.htm - is that right?
