Windows 7 Ultimate has 'gone not genuine' after months of use. RRS feed

  • Question

Can't find an MS UK phone number to call, so hoping I'll get a result here.

This is the result from the diagnostiv tool.

  • Hello ghenryr,

First of all, there is no such thing as a "3-license disc" for Windows 7 Ultimate.  (For a limited time in some markets, Microsoft was selling a 3-license Family Pack Upgrade to upgrade Vista Home Premium to 7 Home Premium, but that is not what you have.)

Your Dell Vostro 200 computer has a software pirating program installed that is called a "loader."  Loaders attempt to defeat Windows Activation Technologies by emulating the data that would be in the BIOS of a name brand computer.  Such data is there because name brand OEM SLP installations of Windows look for the data, and if it is there, they will activate normally.

The loader on your computer is trying to use a Lenovo brand product key that was never installed on any computers to activate your installation of W7 Ultimate.  Here is the snippet of the report:

    Windows Product Key: *****-*****-YG69F-9M66D-PMJBM
    Windows Product Key Hash: /kehptF9HHVxM5d8dUnqgcfndXw=
    Windows Product ID: 00426-OEM-8992662-00497
    Windows Product ID Type: 2
    Windows License Type: OEM SLP
    Windows OS version: 6.1.7600.2.00010100.0.0.001
If you Google for the partial product key above, you'll see zillions of hits on crack and pirating sites.
This part of the report tells us that a loader is being used:

    So, what should you do?
If you purchased the installed copy of Windows, please take whatever steps are necessary to try to get your money back from the seller, who you mentioned was Bannerman Retail on Amazon UK.
If you are not successful with the seller, you can click on the "Learn More Online" links you'll see if you click on the Nongenuine Notices that you are seeing.  Microsoft will sell you a "WGA Kit" that will genuine-ize your copy of Windows at a substantial discount from regular retail.
Or, you can uninstall the nongenuine Windows 7 you have now and purchase a genuine copy from a trusted local or major online retailer.
If your Dell computer has a Certificate of Authenticity for another version and edition of Windows, it is likely still licensed to run that version and edition, so your other option would be to put that original genuine Windows installation back onto the computer.

  • It appears that the software he sent you came with a loader and the blacklisted Lenovo key, sorry to say you were scammed. There was never a 3 pack version for windows ULTIMATE, you will have the same issues with any computers you installed this on.

I suggest you attempt to validate the computers at www.microsoft.com/genuine, after the attempt fails you will be provided with linkes to remedy the situation, you will find windows software at a substantial discount.

Even after changing the key to the new one purchased from MS the loader will still be on, I would advise a clean install on all three computers due to the fact that windows was installed using a bootlegged and modified disk and you may have malware or other issues with that software. If you still want to keep the install you will need to remove the laoder thought I suspect you will have other issuse, I would wait to do this until I had recieved the software from MS.

To remove the loader (Credit unkown)

Here are some Steps if you dont want to go into the details on Micrsoft Website.

    1. Put the Windows 7 installation/Upgrade disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer (set to boot from CD in BIOS).

    2. Press a key when you are prompted.

    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.

    4. Click Repair your computer.

    5. Click the operating system that you want to repair (Windows 7 in this case), and then click Next.

    6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

    7. Once in the command prompt, type exactly Bootrec.exe /FixMbr and then press ENTER. You will see "operation completed successfully." (Doesnt even take a second. Dont be alarmed )

    8. Reboot and set BIOS to boot from the HDD again.

GRUB will be overwritten in step 7 and Windows bootloader will once again take control of loading your OS(s).

    Thanks

  • Carl,

As I suspected, but thanks for your reply.

Just wonder why it took MS so long to figure it as an illegal copy. I installed in Dec 09. Luckily it is only on one computer that I upgraded from Vista to Ultimate.

I'm assuming that Bannerman Retail is UK based because I bought through Amazon.co.uk. So I've given the details to Trading Standards and hoping that they can stop Bannerman trading. Went to look at the feedback for them and found that I'm not the only one who's been scammed.

Can't find the link anywhere for buying a discounted single license to replace my bootleg one. Do you have it?

EDIT: found a link offering it for about £168, surely that isn't a discounted price

  • Hello ghneryr,

The normal selling price of Windows Ultimate Full Retail is £229.99:  http://emea.microsoftstore.com/UK/en-GB/Microsoft/Windows-7-Ultimate-Full

So, if you are seeing it offered directly from Microsoft as a Windows Genuine Advantage Kit at £168, that would represent a 27% discount off regular retail.

I suppose it revolves around one's definition of "substantial" :-)

Yup! - look in the reputable e-shops like dabs.com for prices for Ultimate
Retail (which is what you get, I think) - or even Ultimate Upgrade
    (32-bit prices)
    Retail Full:- £168.02
    Retail Upgrade:- £151.79
    OEM Full:- £156.76

Hmm - there's supposed to be a discount for non-genuine!

Yes, I followed the link, which is where I got the £168 price.

Have now sent a piracy report to MS.

Also Amazon UK have taken action against Bannerman Retail.

Now I need to find the best price possible to replace the counterfeit Windows 7 Ultimate.

    Google is your friend....
    http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=windows+7+ultimate+retail&aq=f
If you KNOW you're not going to be upgrading the PC, then an OEM version
would be sufficient. (the OEM is identical to the retail except for
restrictions in Support, and the fact that you can't transfer the licence to
another machine - and it'll only clean install, or repair a current
installation!... you also only get either the 32-bit or 64-bit disk, but the
license is actually good for either)
    that'd save about £40

I've actually used this store for years for hardware...
Their service has always been very good.

EDIT: found a link offering it for about £168, surely that isn't a discounted price

the same thing happened to me and the offer i got was £139.00 for the get genuine online kit
