Undo re-istall of windows ME operating system

Question
-
I have a 9 year old Dell 8100 with Windows ME. It has been running slow for some time. I thought I could fix it by re-installing the operating system. My first mistake was that I did not back up any of my files. The next problem is that the re-install stalled, so I stopped the install. I figured out how to restart the install but now I'm afraid that if I continue all my files will be gone. 1. Are my files gone anyway? 2. Should I attempt to finish the install? 3. Can I stop or undo the install and recover my files? Thanks, TomThursday, September 2, 2010 8:22 PM

My, it's a long time since I saw an ME problem :)It depends on whether your ME disk is a Recovery disk, or an MS OEM -type disk (many Dells were of this type). To recover your files you need to stop the reinstall NOW!!you can then investigate what files remain, using the boot floppy (or boot CD).Assuming the files are available, then your best bet is to boot using something like a Bart PE disk, and copy the files to a thumb driveYou can then complete the reinstall. For more ME help - feel free to visit my site (below), or www.aumha.net where specialists are available.

Noel,
Yes, it's an old machine. I plan to replace it now, but I want to at least recover my picture files. The disc I have is the MS EOM. How do I stop the install? I can't get into safe mode. It say the system is halted and the windows are protected. What is a boot floppy? Thanks.

You've obviously already stopped the install if your system isn't booting :)The Boot Floppy is the one you use to boot the machine so that you can do the install in the first place. If you don't have one (you may have started the install from inside Windows itself) you can download either a floppy, or a CD from http://www.bootdisk.com/I would recommend that you get the "Windows Me Custom, No Ramdrive" disk for a floppy - it works well for meIf you want a bootable CD, look further down the page...http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm for the Non-"Windows Based Image Files W/ImageApp" for Win ME - it can create a bootable CD for ME.--
