windows defender with OneCare and external drives RRS feed

  • Question

  • Why does OneCare stop Defender?  And, does OneCare also defrag the external drive?

  • 1. OneCare disables Defender because OneCare (refererred to from hereon as OC) contains the ability to check for viruses and spyware. This is by design and is an entirely normal process. This began in  OC version 1.5 and is still the case with version 2.0 (the current one). Please do not re-enable stand-alone Defender as running both it and OC together can cause system instabiltity. Your options are below:

    A. If you are using XP, you have one of two options

        1. Keep Defender installed, but leave it disabled

        2. Uninstall Defender

If you remove OC for another antivirus product, you can still re-enable or re-install Defender

    B. If using Vista, keep built-in Defender disabled, it will re-enable automatically if you remove OC.

In essence, Defender is the spyware protection alternative for those who choose not to use OC

    2. OC will defragment external hard drives if they are powered on before the Tune-Up process begins, but probably won't be read if powered on during a Tune-Up that has already started.
