HI,
I want to restrict a user from viewing the opportunities. The user should be able to view only the opportunity is assigned or shared with him.

So, you just have to assign him a security role that have only the Read privilege for opportunities set to "User" level

yes, only opportunities which are assigned or shared to his name....he should not be able to view opportunities assigned to other name...
