Sharepoint check in and check out documents result in an error

  Here in the office we have an issue with Exchange check in and check out of documents.

  We received a ticket asking us to investigate an issue where a user opens a document, checks out the document and checks it back in after editing. Without closing the document the user wants to edit the document again (thus checking the document back out). In this case the user and us at the support team keep running into the following error: File in use - Document locked for editing by ... Click 'Notify' to open a read-only of the document and receive notification when the document is no longer in use.

  Keep in mind that the document error claims that the document is in use by the user, who is trying to edit the document.

  Does anyone know a solution to this issue?
