Windows 7 non genuine

Question
-
This morning one of my desktops is reporting that it's copy of Windows 7 is not genuine. I tried reactivating but got a message that the key was "blocked from use".
Windows 7 was installed on this computer on or about 12/5 and activated with no problem. I checked the event log and this morning is the first time that it shows an error related to genuine advantage.

The -220- portion of your Product Key indicates that it is a Not-For-Resale MSDN version.
In order to get an MSDN subscription, you need to sign agreements with Microsoft. Then they allow you access to keys that are to be used ONLY for the purpose for which they were intended. When those keys are leaked and "activated" enough times, Microsoft will ban them from further use. That might take over a year before a particular one is banned. But the effect is the same - the counterfeit installation is then flagged as non-genuine.
For more information see the following thread:

If you are not an MSDN subscriber, you will need to purchase a genuine copy of Windows 7, reformat and reinstall. Be sure to backup your data first. If this is the case, contact the seller and demand an immediate refund. Do NOT accept an offer of an alternate key!You did mention "one of your desktops". Do you have an MSDN Volume license?

If you do not have a current MSDN Subscription that entitles you to use a MSDN Subscription Windows 7 Professional product key in a non-production environment, you will need to purchase a conventional Windows 7 Professional license and then proceed to update the Windows 7 product key.

No I don't have an MSDN Volume license. I am a small shop, with around 25 desktops, I'm on a push to get the XP desktops switched over to 7.
Is the product id changed by the product key when it is activated? I know I installed this computer with a disc from the same boxed retail Windows 7 Professional that I have used on several other computers. Those other computers have either -177- or -178-. So is it the key that sets the product id? Just confused, I install from the same disc so that if I am sold a copy with a bad key the legit disc wouldn't accept it. From this I'm guessing that that doesn't help.

What was the source of the boxed Retail set? Did you purchase it from a known reputable source?

Amazon. It is the plastic box with rounded upper right corner embossed with Microsoft on the lower right. Sealed with intact COA. I've used the disc in it to install several computers which as I said show -177- or -178- for their product ids. The original computer installed with that boxed copy hasn't had a problem.
So does the product key dictate what the product id is?

I am not 100% positive how they relate but I believe that yes, the Prod Key helps to create the Prod ID. One thing is certain though is that the 220 range of Product ID is reserved for MSDN use only. If you do not have an MSDN license and were sold this install as a true Retail, then it is counterfeit. I would contact the Amazon seller and try to get a refund. Also do not accept any offer of a replacement Product Key.
