Which MCSE path to choose ?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I don't know if this is the correct place to post this question.

I recently passed the 70-417 upgrade to MCSA Windows Server 2012 and I'm looking to get an MCSE. Right now I can't decide between MCSE Private Cloud and MCSE Server Infraestructure.

For Private Cloud: It's necessary 70-246 and 70-247 but I think that it's best to do first 70-243

For Server Infra: It's necessary 70-413 and 70-414.

    Any advice ??

    Thanks.

  • Hi, turco2025.

First off, congratulations on earning your MCSA: Windows Server 2012! Great job!

Here are some of my opinions about the two MCSE titles you mentioned and the MCTS certifications you mentioned as well.

It seems most IT professionals originally seeking an MCSA 2012 go for the MCSE: Server Infrastructure certification. I believe it is the most common MCSE pursued and owned.

It may be perceived that you are forward-looking by instead earning the MCSE: Private Cloud. It's a less popular certification that may make your transcript stand out from all the other "Server Infrastructure" MCSEs - especially in the future. We know that cloud technologies including fabric are the future for application deployment and management.

NOTE: I find exam 70-243 an interesting certification. It is the only System Center title, besides the private cloud exams. It is not a requirement for any other MCITP, MCSA, or MCSE title other than its own certification: MCTS: Administering and Deploying System Center 2012 Configuration Manager. As well, it's not even listed as one of the available certifications for MCTS.

Whichever MCSE title you follow, the MCTS System Center certification can be a nice complement for it.

Know that the Server Infrastructure exams (413, 414) have been updated to include Server 2012 R2 content while the Private Cloud exams will not be updated until March or April.

You may want to even consider other MCSE certifications. Check them out here:

Good luck with your decision and with your exams!

  • Hello Davin:
           Thanks for the quick response!.

It's true that Server Infraestructure (SI ) is maybe a natural path to achieve MCSE after an MCSA of Windows server, I like the contents of the two exams because they are kind of deep view of some of the technologies already studied in MCSA.

But I'm really interested in virtualization, so maybe I will go after Private Cloud ( PC ). As 246 and 247 have a lot of content related to System Center I tought that It will be usefull to go first for the 70-243. I don't know if I can make 246 and 247 without know 243, what do you think ??.

The big problem right now is that there are no study guides ( books ) of neither of the exams, except for 243.

Next week I will do the 74-409 to have a more complete knowledge of Hyper-V to prepare the path for PC !!!.

    Regards.

PD: By the way I have MCITP Database Administrator 2008. So I'm also planning for this year to take the upgrade to SQL 2012 and maybe an Oracle OCA certification.

Do you know if the two exams for upgrading to SQL 2012 are from exams 70-461,462,463 ??, I mean, there are no books for 70-457,458 that are the exams to upgrade so maybe I can use the books of 461,462 and 463 ?? or only 461 and 462 ??
