Suddenly not genuine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Yesterday when I tried to login to my newly reformatted laptop, I got a very strange pop up telling me that my trial period was over and I had to either enter a new product key or activate my copy of Windows online.  At first, I didn't know what was going on and I did the activate online.  There was a little scan and no errors given and everything seemed to work fine so I didn't think about it.  However, later that night and after it had been restarted, I got the same error and tried the same thing.  This time it told me it was already in use by another computer.  (Yes, I know that... my desktop, which has not been giving me problems [yet] )  I tried to re-enter the product key (from the box I bought from Office Max years ago and still has the stickers on it) and now it is telling me that the product is not genuine.

I don't have access to my start menu and I only have a black background that says Windows Vista TM Build 6000 This Copy is not Genuine in the lower right hand corner.  :/

Anyways, I'm not a big computer person but here is the Diagnostic Report?

    Windows License Type: Retail
    Windows OS version: 6.0.6000.2.00010300.0.0.003

I can see no problems with your report - I therefore suspect that the problem lies with the Licensing store....

Please try the below steps to recreate the Store files.  This may resolve the issue.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

     Reboot

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

The major problem with your system as a whole would appear to be that you have not updated it since it was installed - you are still running the RTM version, rather than either SP1 or SP2. It really ould be a good idea to install both, even if you don't update beyond that.
