Money Plus - Crashes When Open Certain File RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello!

    I am currently helping my grandma get her Money Plus back up and running. She has been using it for a few years, and all of a sudden, the file is corrupt - or something.

    She is using Microsoft Money Plus Home & Business. I know it's only one file, because she is able to open & create others. I have tried changing the default screen when you open the file, but that didn't do anything. I've also tried the repair feature in the software itself, and I still haven't had luck.

    Thanks for your help!

  • Have you tried to open a recent backup?

  • Did she apply the   patched Money Plus Business mnyob99.dll  into her installation? See what is currently the first post in this forum.

  • I did apply the patch already, with no luck. I also tried restoring a previous version in Windows, but the option wasn't available for the file.

    Did you do :File->RepairMoneyFile->StandardFileRepair level 2 ?

    You want to address the backup situation! Imagine what would happen if the hard drive failed, or if a file got corrupted!

    In Money Plus: Tools->Settings->BackupSettings
    I suggest checking
     x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
      Save in [a place on your hard drive ]. It is best to Browse to
         a location rather than typing the path.
       x Ask me before backing up each time*
       x Compress Backup Files
       Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

     x Perform scheduled backups every _28_ days
      Save in [a USB flash drive location]
       x Ask me before backing up each time*
       x Compress Backup Files
       Keep only the _4_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

    Then periodically, perhaps each month or three, copy your latest
    backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR.

    * The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up
    each time I exit.  If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would
    not want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other
    backup files.  You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to
    Postpone.

    I know the backup feature is enabled to prompt every time the program closes, but I think my grandma always postpones. The only files labeled as backup are from 2013. I did try the File Repair already, with no luck. I get an error. I will post it when I get a chance!

  • If her computer is running Windows 7 or later and she has "System Protection" turned on, you may be in luck.  Look for "previous versions" of her Money.mny file by right clicking on the file, choosing "Properties" and then choosing the the "Previous Versions" tab.

    I second Cal's advice about backups.  Get a flash drive ASAP and set up Money to keep several backups on it in addition to backups on her hard drive.
