Network "Risk" if WMC set to OFF on WHS ! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

WHS PP1 used as server for NMT through MyIhome server

Windows Media Connect is usefulness for me, and uses a lot of memory, so, I stopped it on my WHS

Now, the WHS console says :

    Health of Home Network :
Network status : Risk : "Windows Media Connect is not running"

and the PC WHS connector icons are yellow etc..

    My Question :

-> Why is-it an Home Network "RISK" if I stop WMC ?

    Thanks for all :)

Because you are modifying a service that normal users would not have access to and, if stopped, would keep a portion of WHS from working properly.  If you don't want to use Media Streaming, just set the Media Streaming options to off for Videos, Music, and Photos.

    Thanks for your reply

Closing WMC doesn't create any true 'risk', only an loss of one WHS multimedia function

WMC brings his proper risk : It allows WHS to be seen from any networked PC through any Media Connect soft (WMP etc.. ) and opens exchange doors in the WHS Firewall

I closed WMC not because  "I don't  want to use Media Streaming", but because WMC is big in memory and CPU use

I use every day "Media Streaming" from my WHS, but only from MYIHOME, an http streaming server installed on my WHS, which matches perfectly with my NMT ( WHS WMC is not easily useable from my NMT)

If I "just set the Media Streaming options to off for Videos, Music, and Photos", it's more secure (closed doors) but ... WMC is always in memory. ;)

Yes, it's not a "security risk", but it's a service that is needed for Media Streaming and without it, that function won't work.  It's used as a warning to an average user that there is something wrong with their server.  Keep in mind, the target audience is people who don't know much about computers and wouldn't have any idea of how to troubleshoot a problem such as this.

Yes, but only if you use the Media Streaming function. :)

  • Yes, I agree with all the arguments :)

    I discover one thing :

The warning Yellow WHS connectors icons on my PC's, and the "network risk" on my WHS console were present  because I stopped only WMC service

To stop the "network risk" message  and retrieve an healthy network with green WHS connector icons:
-> I stopped also the 3 sharing media for Music, Photos & Videos :
WHS connector / parameters / :  "Sharing the multimedia files " : set to "OFF"  for the 3

Result :  No more security warning :)

I noted that these 3 Media Sharing set to "OFF" stop only WMC sharing (and security warning), and nothing more :

-> The  NMT receives without problem media stream from MyIhome installed on WHS
-> The PC with J River MC13 (a Media Center interface) receives OK the media from WHS
-> Any networked PC can access and read all the shared WHS media, from file explorer

    My 1,5 cents ;)
