Tag Selection RRS feed

  • Question

  • I hope that there will be some way to 'constrain' tag creation.

If left completely to public input, I can imagine that we will see some very 'interesting' tags generated by those with nothing much to do...

Perhaps Users select from a list, Moderators can add to the selection list.

  • That's true you might but since the tag cloud only displays the top 50 tags unless those tags are used by a lot of people over the time they most likely won't surface.

What do we do about bad words? Porn, spam, etc?

That is, I understand that they'll disappear over time, but what about for individual threads? Won't we at least initially see the tags *before* they fall off?

  • Will there be a 'filter' of prohibited 'Tag' words?
Will Moderators be able to add words to that filter?

I've added a few tags to illustrate the problem. They get carried forward in the forums for quite some time.

    Tags: badword1/2, spamword1/2, "my advert"

Which will be needed, because I'm guessing moderators can delete tags, but that will only temporarily solve the problem -- we need a tag ban list. And there are undoubtedly forums that are rarely moderated.

  • To illustrate my earlier point about users 'manipulating' the Tag cloud, I have been tagging all of my post with 'Arnie', 'Great Job'.

When looking at the Tag cloud, it is obvious that my manipulation is effective.

And for any forums that have a low post rate, it won't take much effort for a User to have a significant impact in expressing whatever 'wayward' message he/she desires.

We really will need both a 'prohibited' word filter, and a way for moderators to add new content to the filter.

And as a Moderator, I would want the ability to easily remove a tag.

For example, the current tag "ajax_is_the_spawn_of_the_devil" is not very 'professional', and in my opinion,
somewhat disparaging for a public display of a beta project, and should be removed.

  • We have a profanity filter for each language, so the bad words question should be taken care of by that. I don’t think we currently support moderators editing tags, but I’ll confirm, and if we don’t I’ll add it to the list for the future.

It should become less of an issue, as more people tag, but you’re right, having "ajax_is_the_spawn_of_the_devil" type of tags on forums with less traffic is less than ideal.
