Windows 7 Home Premium Not Genuine Error (0X8004FE21) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have had Windows Vista Home Premium come standard with my Sony VAIO VGN-AW125J, and I upgraded it to Windows 7 Home Premium.  Everything worked well, I decided that I needed to have more storage space, so I went ahead and used Symantec Ghost to image the old drive to a newer, larger hard drive.  After that, it works for a few months, and now it gives me a "Windows Not Genuine" error with the code 0X8004FE21.  I go to the Control Panel to Activate Windows, and it activates correctly.  I restart, and the system shows "Windows Not Genuine".  I have gone through Microsoft Online Support with a representative, did a manual activation, it goes away for a few days, and returns to the same problem.

I have run the Diagnostic tool, and here is the output:

  • This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • I went ahead to install the new Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers, and I still get the "Windows Not Genuine" error, 0X8004FE21.  When I run the Diagnostic Tool, here is the new report:

  • You shouldn't still be seeing the error - your report is now clear and genuine.

Having said that, your Key is showing as being from a not-for-resale MSDN/TechNet account - if you are not the holder of the account, then whoever sold you the Key was in breach of the terms, and your install would be classed as counterfeit, no matter the WGA status.

  • I have a TechNet account with Microsoft, so my keys are legitimate.  All of my other Windows 7 computers are working okay, it is just this laptop that is having the issue.

  • No problem then :)

Are you still seeing a non-genuine notification?

See if validating at www.micrsoft.com/genuine/validate clears it.

  • Well, I restarted the computer one more time, went to the link you posted, and I also performed a Windows Update -- it looks like the error did not show up anymore.  Maybe that was just a fluke.

Regardless, thank you so much for your help.  If the error comes back, I'll go ahead and post in this topic again.

  • Glad to hear it! - good luck.
